We got our puppy (mixed lab) the biggest crate we could and after feeding and drinking, we took the puppy out within 20 minutes since it has a low tolerance...crated the puppy when we were away but put newspaper down just in case. The puppy had only a few accidents but eventually wouldn't go in it's cage...We stuck to a routine and schedule and I didn't leave the puppy in his cage for more than a few hours at a time (I was lucky I worked close and came home every day at lunchtime to let the puppy out). I agree with the leash and don't let the puppy run loose in the house until the potty training is done otherwise you will probably find surprises....and patience--I know it's tough--we've been through it--it will be frustrating at times with the gnawing on the furniture (replace the biting with a chew toy) and the barking, but be patient--and try to be consistant. Good luck.

1. Get a crate that's large enough to allow for growth, but comes with a divider so that you can adjust the amount of room she has. You want to give just enough room that she can stand, but not enough where she can poop and step to the side.

2. Make your schedule for feeding, water, potty and STICK WITH IT. Allow for taking your new baby out additional times during the night when she's young, but by the age of 12 weeks, you should be able to cut back a little.

3. Keep you pup on a leash at ALL TIMES. This not only helps you get her potty trained, but keeps her safe. If you let her off the leash to do her business, she'll think it's play time and she may never go potty.

4. Praise and treat - this will work to keep your dog happy and motivated.

5. Do NOT let your dog run your house until and only until she's completely reliable. Keep your dog on a leash, even in the house, when you are not playing with her.

6. Consider training classes. It's money well spent, especially if you find a good, experienced trainer.

7. Patience - it took time for your mom to potty train you...same applies for you new pup.

Enjoy!

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Read more here https://bitly.im/3Imt4

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

The owner of the dog needs to know how to "operate" the dog, same way you can get into a car that's in perfect running order but if you don't know how to drive you won't have much luck making the car go anywhere. If the owner doesn't know how to maintain the training, the dog will soon become untrained again. Read more here https://tinyurl.im/MBCPc

People seem to think that once a dog is trained, that's it. Not true. You must reinforce the dog's training every single day in some way. It's best if the owner and the dog go together to get trained. As a professional trainer once said to me "We can train any dog in 2 days. It takes longer to train the owners

Housetraining is not an overnight process. We took our dogs out every hour on the hour and encouraged them to go (Hurry up, Be quick, Go potty). Pick a phrase that you will remember and use the same one every time. Take him outside immediately after food and water. At this age, you can't leave their bowls down all day - when something goes in something else has to come out. While you're taking them out, ask them "Do you need to go outside?" Praise Praise Praise when they do it right. Do not scold them when they have an accident. Just pick them up, take them outside and use your special phrase. They need to go out immediately first thing in the morning or after naps when they get up - don't stop to play with them or you'll have an accident to clean up. If you have to leave the house, leave your pup in his crate - he won't want to soil there. Putting paper down tells them that going in the house is okay and should be avoided if at all possible. It can confuse them if you're trying to get them to go outside. After a few weeks, your pup should get the idea. When they're young, they don't have the control that they will when they're older so you might have some accidents even after they seem to be trained. Just calmly take them outside and remind them where they're supposed to go.

Be sure that you clean up any accidents they have and that you use an odor remover on the stain. If they can smell where they went before, they will use it over and over again.

when my family got our first puppy, we took 2 giant jingle bells and tied them together. we then put them on the door knob of the door you will take your puppy outside through. it is important you only use one door to take the puppy outside with otherwise you will confuse the puppy. once he/she learns how to go outside, you can use any door. the reason jingle bells on doorknobs works is because every time you open the door to take your puppy outside, the bells jingle. after a month or so, your puppy will learn to jump up and ring the bells to let you know they need to use the bathroom. after a year or so, if you want to, you could take the bells away and your dog will stand by the door and whine or make some kind of noise to let you know they need to go potty. there are 2 downsides:the bells are kind of annoying but you will get used to them, and if your puppy is clever, they will sometimes ring the bells if they want to go outside because of a squirrel, another dog, etc. just remember to make the bells hang low enough on the door so they can reach them and also dont play with your puppy outside until he/she is potty trained. if you do, your puppy will associate outside with play time, and you want him/her to associate it with going to the bathroom. well, good luck!
