After King Solomon, the United Kingdom succumbed to its deeply rooted separationist elements and split into the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah. In general, Judah was more devoutly Jewish and isolationist, while Israel was more prone to idol worship and international scheming and politics. Israel was destroyed by Senacherib the Assyrian and its people exiled (though a large percentage fled south to Judah). Senacherib laid siege to Jerusalem but failed to capture the city before returning to Assyria to battle for succession. Judah held on for some time until it got uppity and rebelled against Babylon, its patron empire. Egypt had sworn support but failed to provide it, so Judah was taken by Nebuchadnezzar. He razed the Jewish Temple and exiled its people to Babylon. Cyrus the great 70 years later allowed the Jews to return and rebuild their temple, but a large Jewish community stayed in Babylon and settled there for over 1,000 years.
