Take the total settlement - deduct 1/3 plus expenses - now subtract the amount of your medical bills = you get what's left.

Your lawyer may be able to get your medical bills reduced somewhat. It is not uncommon for your attorney to try and negotiate the amount of the charges to reduce the amount the providers get and increase your/his share.
