Root canal procedures are preformed by placing a local anesthetic, which are very effective in most cases in eliminating any pain during the procedure. Exceptions are when an infection is reducing and blocking the absorption of the anesthetic which reduces its effectiveness. Some times it's not an option to wait while placing the patient on an oral antibiotic to get the infection under control.
There really isn't a need to be placed under general anesthesia for this procedure, although it is being offered by a few dentists, but it is very costly.
If your teeth are badly broken down, root canals may not be an option for you. Your dentist will evaluate your individual case and decide what would be best for you and then he will offer options for you to decide from.
The root canal procedure it's self isn't painful, it's the pain associated with a dying nerve that causes swelling and inflammation resulting in pain. A painful "abscess" is almost always mistakenly referred to as a painful "root canal." I'm not saying that all are pain free, only that most of them are.
I'm not sure how old you are or what condition your teeth are in, but it would be to your advantage to begin dental care correcting any problems you may have and preventing others from occurring. Your teeth are a very important part of maintaining you’re over all good health, don't neglect either.

Atomic,
PLEASE do not be afraid. Dentistry has come a very long way in the last twenty years; I've had SIX root canals, and they are virtually painless.
Your dentist will hit you up GOOD with novocain before this procedure is done (if you even need it done.) The hardest thing about a root canal is keeping your mouth open for a couple of hours!
The following day, your jaw may be a little bit stiff, but that's from the injections. It's no big deal, and your tooth won't hurt a bit.
I've been through childbirth AND root canals, and believe me, the root canals were a piece of cake! Good luck to you...not a thing to be nervous about!

No..not that bad. Actually the shot you get to numb is worse..but then again I'm terrified of that, so its different for everyone!! The root canal itself is nothing since you're totally numb. I don't know about putting you to sleep, but they will more than likely put you on some gas also..which will calm your nerves. No worries--you'll be fine. I did my normal routine after the ones I've had also, pain free. Your mouth will be a bit sore from the shot, but thats all!! Hope all goes well for you!

That's crap, root canals don't hurt, it's the pain that forces you to
get a root canal that hurts (like Hell).
You don't need to be put out, it's really pretty comfortable, just go to a dentist that specializes in root canals. I believe they're call Endodontists.

Mine hurt before, during and after the procedure. I don't think they put people to sleep, but they do numb the mouth.

I've had lots of them.
Modern anaesthetics make this a painless procedure.
Don't worry about the pain, be more worried about the price.
