It is very common for a radiologist to request additional views on a mammogram. Sometimes there is a dense area of breast tissue which they wish to magnify to see if the density is "pressed out" by the pressure of the mammogram (indicates normal breast tissue) or if there are other characteristics which require further testing, such as calcifications. Also, if there is a suspected mass the radiologist may order an ultrasound which will show the difference between a cystic (fluid-filled) or solid mass. Cystic masses can often be aspirated (drained) right away and the fluid that is removed will be sent to pathology for evaluation. If a solid mass is found, a biopsy may be performed either in the mammogram or ultrasound suite, your doctor's office, or in the operating room. Again, the tissue samples will be sent for evaluation by a pathologist. Keep in mind that most breast tissue biopsies result in negative results. However, benign breast disease (non-cancerous) can be an indication of increased risk for developing breast cancer, so continue getting regular mammograms. Good luck!

I've been there. It is awful not knowing and if they can't schedule you for additional testing for several days the waiting is even worse. Try to stay focused on other things until you get your results, it really helps. I've been there, waiting over a long holiday weekend to get results and then the doctor didn't call for two more days. I called her and told her don't make me make an appointment to come in for results. Tell me on the phone.

Get the further testing. Worry won't change a thing, and you don't have enough info yet. Deep breaths. Stretch any tense parts. Get tested.
