Everything you need for a cat can be purchased from your local pet store or even Wal-Mart.
When you first get a cat, you should already have: A litter box, big enough for the cat and litter. You should also have food, food bowl and a water bowl. That is really the bare necessities.
Since you can technically make your own 'cat toys' out of aluminium foil or even the plastic milk rings.
What you should have to keep a happy cat:
Besides the above, you should really have a collar on the cat with tags, just in case the cat gets out. You sould have plenty of toys, a cat bed, a cat taxie, cat treats, flea medication, scratching post, and soft claws (you will thank me later).
Soft claws are silicon caps that go over the cats nails. You glue them onto the cats nails and it prevents them from doing any damage to your furniture and your skin. They really are a great product and will prevent you from needing to declaw your cat.

Like the person before me said, a litter box is a must have, but a brush and a litter box scooper is a must have also. Toys are preferred, but not NEEDED. Cats may get very bored without them though. If your cats are outdoor cats, you should probably buy them a collar, just so they don't kill any birds, and so if they get lost, someone knows where they came from and what to do.

I disagree with people who say toys and scratching posts are not requirements.
Cats are stuck in the house all day, and young ones need something to play with or they'll just end up playing with something that is not a toy. If you don't buy any toys, then you get what you ask for. It's in a cat's nature to scratch things, and if you buy a scratching post they should be more inclined to use that than your furniture. Here's a thought... buy the scratching post that IS a toy (it's a ball in a round track with a scratching pad in the middle)... all of our cats have loved that thing.

You definitely do not need 2 liter boxes. I have a cat he and is just fine with one. I use Fresh Step scoopable liter and it is kind of expensive (ten dollars a box) but it really works to mask any smell that might be left after scooping. My cat doesnt really care about toys but he loves hair bands and milk tops.....pretty inexpensive :) I would definitely trim the nails so that no furniture gets messed up.

Food and water are the basic needs. :)
Technically you don't NEED a litter box. You just WANT one to prevent kitties from pottying around the house. ;)
You don't NEED food bowls, you WANT them for convenience and less mess.
You will also want toys to prevent kitties from being bored and have things to play with. A scratcher is nice to have so they don't scratch everything else. Nail trimmers are nice to keep their nails short and not sharp. Cat bed you might want, although my cats don't use the one I got for them. Brushes to groom your kitties are nice too.

You should consider getting cat grass and little catnip toys too, especially if the cat you're adopting is used to being outside.
