How do I respond when people tell me I'm beautiful or pretty. Usually I say "Thanks, but you haven't met my little sister. She's ridiculously beautiful" (which is true). Or often, people compliment on my clothes, or jewelry and I'll say where I bought them, or whether they were difficult to find, or new or I tell them that their dog or child is beautiful. I always feel as if I'm doing wrong in these situations and being rude. How can I strike a balance between being too humble and not humble enough?

Most people compliment someone else without being expected to receive a compliment in return. Therefore, a, "Thank you, that made my day!" or "That's really nice of you to say. Thank you!" is humble enough.

You're being humble, and there's nothing wrong with that. At least you're not one of those people trying to draw compliments to yourself. You're doing the exact right thing, somewhat taking the attention off yourself but acknowledging that someone said something to make you feel good. Maybe tell them something like "That's nice of you, you made my day", or compliment them back on something. Just be glad there's positive attributes about you people think are pleasing...

Just say thanks. Most often, people don't really care where your jewlery came from or how much your clothes cost. If you're wearing a special antique bracelet from your grandmother who was married to a great viking, then you can tell the story behind it, but no one really cares that you bought your shirt at Aritzia. If they did, they would ask.

A safe answer is always to complement them back. If they like your shirt, tell them they have nice eyes or cute shoes. But you have to be genuine...people see right through lies.

As a rule of thumb, I always make sure that I give more complements than I recieve...it's a karma thing. I owe a complement since some girl complemented my jacket today...it sounds crazy, but people aren't nice enough. Think about how great you felt when someone complemented your eyes, you should make someone else's day.

you have esteem issues. do not let anyone cut the rug out from under you including yourself. people must see something in you that shines if they are willing to compliment you. so often these days compliments are rare, treat them like the gifts they are. most people just want to make a simple social connection and do not expect much in return. thanks and a nice smile does the trick for most. if trouble speaking the thanks write a note. they just want you to know they like you. dont give your power away to other people by offering them to compliment others rather than you. they picked you for their own reasons. they might become uncomfortable themselves when you add to much to these simple social niceties. you are so beautiful and one of a kind. so shine on star girl!

Just say thank you with a smile. Stop down grading their compliment because you think your sister is more lovely than you. Accept compliments with grace and few words.

Just say thanks and keep on your day, you are not being rude, because a compliment does not need an answer - jsut THANKS. Only answer is needed if they inquire as to where you got any particular item.
