First Continental Congress Peyton Randolph was the president from 9/5/1774 to 10/21/1774
**** BUT Thomas McKean was the President of the United States in Congress Assembled. He served from 7/10/1781-11/14/1781. He is the FIRST to simply use the title "President of the United States" in an official document

The United States declared its independence in 1776, yet Washington did not take office until April 30, 1789.
So who was running the country during these initial years of this young country?
It was the first eight U. S. Presidents.
In fact, the first President of the United States was one John Hanson.

John Hanson, American Patriot and First President of the United States.
He was elected President in 1781.
A President was needed to run the country.
John Hanson was chosen unanimously by Congress (which included George Washington).
In fact, all the other potential candidates refused to run against him, as he was a major player in the Revolution and an extremely influential member of Congress.

It was George Washington. The other man you're thinking of has never been considered the president of the United States of America. Someone else has asked this question before.

George Washington was the first president of the United States, there was no president before him. He was elected sometime after the Revolutionary War, where the colonies won their Independence from England. Before the war we ruled by King George the third of England.

We didn't have one before then; we were under rule from Britain in seperate colonies. The Articles of Confederation were drafted to bring us together. No President existed.

It WAS George.
