Inside an IC almost all the heat is transferred by conduction -- from the junctions in the die to the case through the gold bond-wires and the thermal-epoxy holding the die to the case.

Outside the IC, most of the heat is transferred by conduction through the pins and the IC body to the pc board, with less than half transferred by convection -- from the case to the ambient.
