My husband and I are remodeling. We are taking down a wall between our living room and office to make one big living room. To have a good furniture layout, we will have to eliminate the current door into the office area. I would like to still have a doorway to access this area for better traffic flow, but the only space available for a new doorway is about 27" wide. Is that too narrow?

If that door is only used for access to the office, a door as small as 24" would work. Keep in mind, though, that you are going to be seriously restricted as to what you can put in that office with only a 27" opening. Most access doors to separate rooms are from 24" (closets and bathrooms) to 30" (bedrooms, dens, etc.).

However, you may not be able to find a 27" door. In that case, you'll have to buy a 28" door and cut it down to size.

I agree with Sean, 24" is common for a closet door and that is find for getting clothes and your self in and out of the closet.

You could go with the 27" as long as you don't have to get any furniture or other stuff in and out throught this door.

Is the swing of the door the problem? Could you use a pocket door that slides into the wall work? Since you are remodeling, that is another choice.

All of the doorways in our house (which is almost 100 years old) are 28", and we havn't ever had any issues with it! But, then again, both my husband and I were and are in the Navy (he is, I was), so we're used to small doorways! But seriously, it will work just fine! Good luck!

24" is the smallest opening for a door, and thats normally for a closet.
