I am asking because we have 2 acres of land and I want to fence in about 1.5 acres of it. Is that enough land for a big dog to have room to stretch its' legs(as in be able to run around freely)?
what would you call a small yard? medium? average? large?

Don't worry people, I do plan on walking/socializing my dogs(it's no fun owning a dog if you don't walk it),I just wanted to know if I will have a big enough yard for them to play in :).

More than enough. I have a Newfie/chow mix 105lbs. & he has plenty of room on just over a half an acre. 1.5 acres is great, many dogs would be in their glory. Most dogs that come to my pet hotel & that I walk have .25 acre or less. Just be careful, dogs can find trouble when left unattended in an area that large. Such as eating dead carcasses, feces, encounter other animals, fighting, etc. Dog proof as much as possible LOL. No matter how big a yard is my dog looks for an escape route, including digging under fences. Sounds like your dogs have it made.

I think it's a big misconception that you need a big yard to have a big dog, to give the tog "space to stretch its legs" and "run around freely".
Exercise is great and needed, but dogs don't just go out and exercise when you open the door. Dogs want to have a game to play or something to do. Toss a ball back and forth and your dog will get a lot more exercise in a smaller area than just turning the dog loose to go and play. Take your dog on a hike or swimming in a lake and river, and he'll get a lot better exercise than just being turned loose in the yard.
It's not so much the space they need - it's what you do with it. If you have 1.5 acres at your disposal, why not build some agility equipment for something fun and challenging for you to do with your dog?

That's big enough for a horse to stretch his legs in. I have an acre my shepherd has about 1/2.
Maybe you can get a few big dogs from the shelter a place to be dogs!

yes it's not the amount of land but excercise.
I went to a grooming school in NY city and one person had 2 great danes and lived in an appertment.
tehy took them to teh dog parks and walked miles evryday. I have seen great danes in a very large yard an acre or a little more and htey didn'[t have the muscle mass that the 2 in NY had.
I did read where you also plan to excercise yo9ur dogs. So don't get me wrong but just wanted you to understand.

That is plenty of room. But also remember, dogs are migratory animals and need exercise..not only for their bodies but their mental health. you will still need to walk them, take them out for socialization, etc. I take my Doberman out every day to the River and trails for at least 40 minutes a day even though he has a big back yard .

I think so - but you'll definitely want to play Frisbee or something with it. Not all dogs will run around on their own regularly. Just like some people, they need motivation to exercise.

I would say that this is more than enough property. Sounds like a very lucky dog to have that much room to run in.
