This is still America, right? Then why don't we encourage everyone to only speak English here?
I have no problem with a German coming to live in the US as an American-German, or a Mexican coming here to be an American-Mexican, but the ones coming here to make America "little Tokyo" or "Northern Mexico" piss me off!
If any US citizen went to Mexico, and tried to get welfare, or send our kids to school there, we would be arrested!
All we have to do is enforce the labor laws and rules we have on the books now, deny basic medical care at hospital ER rooms (kick them out unless life-threatening), charge tuition for public schools for NON-RESIDENTS, and require Government Issued ID for all government sponsered services (ffod stamps, welfare, etc.).
When are we going to wake up before it's too late?
Come to America - whoever wants to come - I welcome you...
...but only come if you truly want to be an AMERICAN.

Oh, and yes - I agree with "free speech" issues, but not Government printed booklets and tax forms in 27 languages, etc. or "Press 1 for English", etc. If you want to speak Jiberish - or whatever laguage you wish at home, fine. But official signs, documents, forms, school, etc. should be American English only.

I agree that for an immigrant to adjust to being in the U.S. successfully, they must speak English. I have to wonder at all of the opinions of the OTM immigrants about Spanish being all over the place but no catering to Germans, Asians, Czechs, Russian, Mid Easterners, etc....it's an odd thing that not only are American's being so readily slapped across the face by the elected officials but so many businesses as well. Let's just shut the door to all of that and stop catering to the laziness of those that refuse to learn and speak the language that we speak....English. We have never seen an influx of immigrants from any other country that has expected us to cater to them on the level that ILLEGAL (which makes it that much worse) Mexicans, in particular and en masse, do. This is America...period. Not open for debate and surely isn't open to be turned into Mexico by word, thought, or deed. I'm sick of it too.

Personally, I love the sub cultures here like Chinatowns, little Tokyo, Koreatown, and Mexican Neighborhoods as well. America is built on the principal of "land of oppurtunity." Why do peole from other countries usually speak more than their native tongue and Americans can barely speak one. There is more encouragement and it is required. In 30 years more than half the population will be Hispanic so then we can change the language to Spanish right?

Poor Phydeaux has a problem with languages. Languages is use to communicate with people. I can't understand what your fear is. Remember there is nothing in your constitution, which states that English is the official language.
Dia duit Irish for hello
Salut French hello
Goddag Danish hello
Define what is American? There is no one definition of an American. You seems to think that if a person speaks English, then that makes him or her an American

Maybe go a little more in depth on how much she worries about it. If there's a specific reason (other than society's expectations on how a woman should look) maybe add a bit of info on that. (eg, was she picked on? Is she picked on still?). I know a lot of girls who spend two hours on hair and makeup every morning that still feel hopeless because they'll never look like the airbrushed model in a magazine. You've got the bones for the intro, you just need to add a bit of flesh to 'em now :) Hope I've helped! Best of luck on your speech! ttfn :)

I agree, Everyone in america should speak english fluently and everything should be in English like school, work, sings, TV, radio.
The nation speaks english, why some people who think america is a place to make money can destroy our language.
America is history, culture, a way of live so love it or leave it or speak english or leave it.

I think we know why other countries want us to be able to speak their language before visiting them.
Imagine how many many smart people in this country we could could generate if it was a requirement to speak the language of the country you are visiting, even if only a little bit.

Libs and pro-amnesty groups don't want to force anyone to learn English. Doing so would mean those immigrants are on the same playing field (or much closer to it at least) as everyone else. They don't want that, they want immigrants dependent on the government. The more people who rely on the government for basic living, the more guaranteed voters you have. Its about control and long term power.
And to set the record straight: Nobody is saying you have to ONLY speak English. Just that you have to learn English.

If we cut out food stamps, welfare, medical and public educational costs associated with illegal aliens we would save BILLIONS every year! B I L L I O N S ! !
Crap - I have to pay for my stuff, and the illegals stuff too with state & federal taxes!!! You're right "Fido" - if we all don't do something now, we will all pay for it later!
(and sorry folks - but they are ILLEGAL not "migrant" or "undocumented)
Come in legally the right way so we can control it and everyone wins.
(( I HATE PRESS 1 FOR ENGLISH TOO!))

Im really not into telling people they are wrong but you are very very wrong! While I completley agree that people with government jobs MUST speak the legal language, and I even would go so far as to say that private buisness like deli's and pizzaria's ect... should be hiring people who speak or are really really trying to learn our language. However and this is a very big however if someone came here and was told that you can't speak anything except english from then on we would NOT have a free country. The beauty of this country is that I could decide to speak gibberish if I wanted to and no one could stop me.

When it gets written into law, it will be official that it is necessary to speak English to live here.
I haven't seen that happen yet... have you?
Perhaps you should write your Congressman about this.
