1] pick two - three favorite colors, and one neutral group - white, gray, black; or ivory, caramel, espresso.
2] use one main [ 60% ] and two accessory color [ 30 and 10% ] in each room - say;
blue with mint and lavender, and gray/silver accessories for living room [ LR ];
mint with lavender and blue, and black accessories/utensils for kitchen [ K ];
lavender with blue and mint, and white accessories for bedroom [ Bdr ].
Match the bath [ Bth ] to the bedroom or living room.
All the colors flow, work well together, and can be re-arranged if you wish.
3] frame all artwork in similar color and materials - brass or chrome, oak or walnut, or colored enamel [ suggest chrome/ silver ] for above color scheme. Use matting in the room colors [ blue, mint, lavender for above ].
4] add a plant[s].
5] add decorative pillows in wall, drape, or upholstery colors for LR; bedding, drapes, or wall color for Bdr.
6] purchase small accessories in your colors [ above - blue, mint, lavender, silver ]

first take inventory of all the furniture and everything. if you want new furniture, do that before you do anything else. then, when all that is settled, arrange it how you want it. then, starting with the living room, kitchen, dinning area (if there is one), bedrooms, then bathrooms, figure out if you want to paint it. i painted by bathroom canary yellow and it has a completely different feel than when it was just plain white, plus it looks nicer ha. but yeah a coat of paint can REALLY change a room. be sure to pick a nice color that compliments both the space and the furniture. then move onto wall decorations and paintings; again, pick pictures and frames that go with the colors of the room. each room has a different feel, so don't think you're limited to having one type of anything. one room may have flowers, another people.
finally work on the little things that wont need much attention, such as candles and lamps and stuff. again make sure they complement the furniture. then...you're done! have fun in your new house

Start with the things that you already have and really like. You'll quickly find that only certain colors and styles come into play. Once you have the beginnings, build on that. And just know that it doesn't have to be done in a day. Some of the best, most comfortable places I've seen are continually a work in progress. What makes a home a home is surrounding yourself with the things you love... it's really a reflection of you! Your guests will feel it, too because they know you, and will feel "you" all around them when they visit!
Enjoy yourself most of all! Not very often you get the chance to start with a clean slate!

I'm not sure if you're asking which room to start in or where to look for inspiration. I think you should start in whatever room you spend the most time in and work your way to where you spend the least time.
If you're talking inspiration, first find a fabric that you like, a work of art, a plate, etc. Then, use the colors from it for paint, curtains, etc.
