Not the best, but the most famous!
On the post race show, on speed, the women commentator ask Dale Jr. if he knew that he sells 70% of all Nascar merchandise sold and that all the other drivers sell only 30% collectivly.
Those are some pretty bold figures!
I'm not a Dale Jr. fan, but I'm impressed by those numbers.
It shows that he may have the largest fan base ever!

Those numbers were based on Motorsports Authentics sales, a huge superstore for all racing stuff.. I spoke with a csr person at Racingusa.com the guy said he probably right now is about 60% of their sales, his sales are bigger now because everyone was buying up as much of the bud#8 as they could and with all his new stuff for next yr, he said they can not keep his new stuff in stock its unreal... After all this calms down he will probably go back to 30-40% like he normally is...Yes he has a huge fan base...I think to as he gets older these number will decrease, unless he starts winning alot and gets a couple championships, then who knows the number might increase.. Out here in calif Target had a huge Nascar section, with Gordon,Johnson,Harvick, both Busch's, Stewart, and Dale Jr..Kasey Kahne, there was never any Dale Jr or Kasey Kahne, and Tony Stewart items they were always sold out, tons of the other guys stuff on the shelf.. Right now his fan base is definitely the biggest.

Now days he is the most popular but all time most famous I think not. Bill Elliott won the most popular driver like 11 straight years. Dale Sr is more famous than Jr for his accomplishments. BUT RICHARD PETTY IS THE MOST FAMOUS--9 straight most popular driver of the year awards--Most Races won--7 Championships-- and is the most recognized Nascar celebrity --also a long time Nascar spokesman since his retirement. Plus is still doing charitable work through the Victory Junction Gang and helping kids through the Make A Wish foundation as well. Still gaining exposure after all these years!!!!!!

Famous? Not outside the NASCAR world. Some people may know him as the guy in the jeans commercials.

My wife moved to the US from England about 8 years ago. She had never heard of Richard Petty or Dale Earnhardt. The only NASCAR driver she knew of was Jeff Gordon.

I don't know about the most famous. Maybe the most popular. If I had to tag a driver with the term "famous" I'd pin it on Richard Petty.

Now in another 10 years when the younger fans get older Jr will be considered the most famous. Famous to me seems like it covers all of history while popular describes the present time.

I need to question a statement that you have in your question. Are you sure the figures are correct? I thought the amount of sales Jr carried was 30% and the rest of the drivers shared the other 70%. I could be wrong.

I watch all the different kinds of racing, but my favorite is NASCAR. I thought I would make this disclaimer before I presented the facts.
Dale Jr. is the most popular driver, in terms of numbers, in NASCAR history, but that doesn't make him the most famous. His father, Richard Petty, AJ Foyt, and Mario Andretti are the most famous drivers to have driven in NASCAR who are known around the world (If you mean among full time NASCAR drivers, then leave out the last two names). Since Formula 1 has 300 million fans compared to NASCAR's 80 million, I would say that, among today's NASCAR drivers, the former F1 drivers, Montoya and Villeneuve are more famous than Dale, Jr, and they aren't popular at all.

No, but he is the most popular driver at the moment, but
famous? Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt Sr. are still
more famous and should be.

I would have to say no, famousness has to go to Richard Petty (The King) and Dale Earnhardt, Sr. (The Intimidator).

Dale Jr would get a vote for being one of the more popular drivers right now though.

Not sure where you get your information from, but Dale Jr's., selling power is tops in NASCAR, which does about $2 billion in annual retail sales.

Having said that, Mark Dyer, NASCAR’s vice president of licensing said Earnhardt Jr. owns between 25 and 30 percent of the market. Jeff Gordon, the No. 2 driver in sales, is “in the mid- to-high teens,” Dyer said.

I travel all around America and I see Earnhardt Sr stuff all over the place. Jr can ride his dad's popularity, but I'd have to say more people know Dale Earnhardt and the #3 car. Legends never die. Richard Petty is up there, but it's been a long time since he drove and many people have a short memory.

Just because his is the most popular merch, now, doesn't make him the most popular driver ever. He would, more than likely, be the most popular at that particular time but not the most popular there ever was. Bill Elliot was voted most popular many years in a row. It really depends on what age bracket you are posting your question to. After all, there's Richard Petty & Dale Sr. What about years when his merch wasn't selling the most?
