Yes, it hurts, but not for long. Afterward the muscle will ache, as though from overuse. To reduce the pain of the actual shot, apply hard pressure with one finger to the injection site for about 30 seconds before the injection to confuse the nerves so you won't feel it as much. Just ask the nurse to let you do this before he or she swabs the area to administer the shot.

Take Tylenol afterwards for a day or two to reduce the residual ache from the vaccine, and you'll be fine.

Tetanus cases are relatively rare in the US (about 100 per year) because we are so good at staying vaccinated. Tetanus is nothing to mess around with - a 2 second preventative shot is nothing compared to the agony and possible death tetanus can cause.

It's ok to be afraid no one likes needles. I am usually fine with them as long as I don't look and the nurse at my doctors clinic knows that and always keeps it of my sight, but when I had my tetanus shot this year the doctor who i've known for 15 years had to do it. He stood in front of me and preapred the 2 inch long device and when he saw my tear filled eyes he said "You're not scared of a little needle are you" and I replied with "No, I just can't watch" and then he apolgized, I rolled my sleeve up and I didin't even feel it. A few hours later though it began to get sore but I just used an ice-pack for a while and it was fine.

My tips are:
Tell the person giving you the shot you are scared
Keep your arm relaxed
Take slow deep breaths
and don't watch.

Good Luck, Be Brave

I am also terrified of needles. The real hurt is probably because you're scared of needles--mine is. You've been pinched before, you don't like it but you survive. Frankly, it's not nearly as hurtful as a pinch, but you feel like it is. To get through shots--I'm now a G-mother--I never look at the needle, and when they say to get ready I hold my breath until it's over. Works like a charm. Sometimes I ask for the pediatric nurse to give me a shot. If you have no choice of nurses, you might forego this question as it might make the nurse nervous. There are too many germs around nowadays, so wash your hands often and take the tetanus shot--they're good for ten years. GOOD LUCK.

The shot itself only lasts a few seconds and the fluid does burn a little going into your arm, but please don't be terrified. My arm was sore for days afterwards. I should have remembered to massage the area where I got the shot and put ice on it for the first day at least, but I forgot. Don't get the shot in the arm that you use the most, just in case your arm stays sore for a while. You need to get it done, so think of the long term benefits, not the short term discomfort. Good luck!

The shot itself doesn't really hurt that bad, however with tetanus shots it hurts the next day. Your arm will feel like its bruised. When you get the shot just look away and squeeze something. The pain from tetanus is far more worse than the shot

I've had a few Tetanus shots over the years since I work in a factory. It's going to sting a little when the needle goes in, and will give you a mild to moderate burning sensation as the medicine goes in. Unless you have a very low pain tolerance, you should be fine.

It does hurt. All shots hurt. Unfortunately with a tetanus shot it can be worse. I've had two in my life and each time I've gotten a goose egg welt where I got the shot. It's because the shot is a deep tissue shot. It has to be injected into your muscle.

When you go to have it done, let the nurse know your fear, let them know that you are a bit afraid by it. Take a friend with you to hold your hand, if you need to.

I don't like needles ether. No one does, and that fear is normal. Of course, that is penetrating tissue, skin and muscle, so u must feel some pain. The thing is it is all in your mind. Talk to someone over the phone while the shot is taken. U know it's not bad! Try to relax. Nothing can happen, and there is almost no pain, except for the one that is normal to feel. But after all it is just one shot, one second.

Stay strong, I'm with u!

It is a series of shots and they do hurt each one hurts a little more after the other one. It's the pain the next day that hurts the most it feels like your arm is being weighed down by a 100 pound brick. But that pain will subside by the second day.

I got three shots about 2 wks ago, it didn't hurt that bad at first, but after a while of using my arms i could definitly tell something had happened, my arms were really sore after like 2 hrs, for like 2days, but then it went away, and i forgot all about it...
