The site listed above is correct. There are three major credit reporting companies and you can receive one free credit report from them per year.
If you spread your reports out you can get one credit report every four months for free and get more frequent insights into your credit record.

As others said.
j g is confused when he says 'in most states'. This site is mandated under FEDERAL law. You are entitled to on free report every 12 months from each of the 3 major bureaus in EVERY state. When the site was created, it was made available to a few states at a time to avoid overloading it with to many requests at once. It has been available nationwide for more than a year.
