I'm looking to build a 7 x 9 foot shed behind my garage and I was wondering if I needed a permit of any kind to do this. I own the house and its on my property, I just dont know the technicalities.
any help would be appreciated :)

You really need to check with city hall. Most don't require a permit for a shed. But you should call or look up your city hall online just to be on the safe side. If you put it where they don't want you to or build it to big they can make you take it down.

It depends greatly where you live and the wind zone etc. There is a national building code that restricts building sheds without a permit, but if your in a rural area the code loses affect. The reason behind permitting the shed is mostly keeping the shed tied to the ground in case of hurricane and tornadoes lifting the shed and causing damage to others property. In most cases you need a permit. Check with your local building and zoning officials.
Sheds can usually be built on the property, and building restriction lines as long as they don't exceed a certain height and size. This also depends on the regulations of your county and the density of residential property etc. Like I said you need to check with your local building and Zoning officials because they both have say in the matter.

It;s safer to always check first with your county offices. You surely don't want to build something that you may be asked to tear down. It also depends on whether or not you live in a community with a home association. That always requires approval by the association first and permits by the county.

The rule of thumb here is if it has any electrical wiring you need a permit. If it's just a shed you wouldn't need one to build it here. But always always always check with your town's buliding officals.
