Yes. The traditional assignment for a Second Lieutenant is as a Platoon Leader of a Marine Infantry Battalion, unless that Second Lieutenant is a Naval Aviator. In that case he will normally be flying combat aircraft in close-air support of ground troops.

Everyone has the possibility of being selected to join a combat unit or even one that supports a combat unit. So, chances are you should be prepared to accept that fact if you are thinking on joining the Corps.
