Depends on your view of pathetic.
Bill Gates could buy pretty much anything, do pretty much anything in urban society. Put him in a rainforest and he'll be pretty pathetic.
A native tribesman can do pretty much whatever he wants in the forest and get whatever he wants, but stick him in an ICT lab and he'll be just as useless as Billy in the jungle.
Pathetic implies a setting and purpose. Survival skills today are different to the ones a few years ago. C'est la vie. I admit there are a few people who manage to be pathetic in almost any circumstances, but a lot of it is context.

I believe that people are less pathetic these days than they ever were in the past, because although a large portion of us are followers with very little logic and therefore capability of thinking for ourselves... we are being encouraged to do it nowadays, and people are more open to honesty/reality, like the fact that females have brains, and the God-given right to use them, and the fact that there are a lot of gay people who deserve to live, without being tortured for coming out. I don't know, i think that society is making progress in its evolution.

It is easy to become frustrated with people and to become angry at their shortcomings. When people have little self-awareness, or when they experience desperate circumstances, they tend to act from fear, anger, ignorance, etc... They are utilizing only a minute part of their potential.
So many of us become spiritually constipated. We lose our enthusiasm for becoming better people and for self-discovery. It happens and I accept it. I try not to judge. I try not to forget the importance of caring, loving, forgiving. Our optimism and positive energy can work miracles. It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.

I agree with you. I ask myself that same thing everyday. Between the people I work with and my roommate, I am surrounded by some pretty pathetic people. I think they dont know how to help themself, and they are just looking for pity from everyone else.

It is just the way most kids or people are. They just don't care. Everyone can get like that. It just takes people who are down to earth to stay who they should be. (if this makes ANY sense at all...) ;-D

There is no meaningful depth to anything anymore - society has become addicted to surface pleasures and shallow and quick conversations. When everything speeds up and becomes too efficient, depth and meaningful interaction decreases and no one seems to be self-sufficient anymore.
