I've heard the word 'Lupetta' used as a pet name, but a friend of mine says it is actually an Italian slang word for prostitute. Which is it? What does the word really mean?

It maybe. In fact "lupetta" means "little wolverine".
In ancient Rome prostitutes were called "lupae" (=female wolves).

That's absolutely not true.
I'm Italian, living in Italy and I've never heard of this name "lupetta" meaning prostitute.
It's true instead what above answerer wrote that in Latin "lupa" has also the meaning of prostitute, but "lupetta" is a different word, is not a Latin word, it's Italian and it just means "she-wolf cub" or "small she-wolf".
Go on with it.
