There used to be useable macros in the file, but now they are gone and the file size stays the same.

Is there a way to search and delete these?

The very first thing to do is do a back up on the file before deleting any macro, so in case something wrong you have a 2nd chance.
1. open excel, Alt+f8, the macro window will list the macro available, choose the one that you don't use, click to highlight it and click delete button.

2. if you want to do it more thoroughly, cause some private sub will not be listed using method in 1., click edit after the macro window appear, (or Alt+F11) go to the vba editor and go thru the module(s), check the code to confirm those one that you don't want, and erase them.

Note: you have to delete in related lot to avoid problem, some function are related to specific sub, and some sub are interrelated.

Hope this helps

Be careful about what you delete. If you delete custom functions or macros that automatically update stuff for you, then you could mess up the spreadsheet.

Macros normally don't take up a lot of room. The number of rows and columns that are used in your workbook are normally what makes up the majority of the file size or if you have pictures in the file. If you have borders around blank cells, all of those blank cells get included in the file size, making the file bigger.

I'd first see if you could reduce the number of rows and columns in your workbook that Excel considers as part of its used range.
