Let's say there's this cool book that you want to borrow and you request the library to hold the book for you, until it's time for you to borrow it.
How would you feel if people ahead of you damage the book that you're interested in? Maybe they even wrote in the book or tear some pages? Maybe they didn't wash their hands after using the bathroom and it made the book smell of crap (of course, we don't know that but it could happen)?
Hope you get my point.

Someone else may need to read the book, so I take good care of it.

In 1999, I used a 1920's foreign dictionary before from an old library. If it was not well-cared for, I may not be able to benefit from what it provided (was trying to understand a story written a long time ago).

I'M THE ONE WHO REPAIRS THE BOOKS AT MY LOCAL PUBLIC LIBRARY.

When I retired, I volunteered to learn how to do this, because I am grateful for this wonderful free service of lending books, and because I think books are fascinating and beautiful.

Most of the time, the books sent to my workshop are not old books, but recent best sellers whose spine has been broken, probably in marking a place by turning the book upside down while it was open.
Children's books take a beating, but partially because they are often large sized and the spines are subjected to more force when the large front and rear covers are opened.

If I may make a plea: please mark places with single-layer book marks, and pile the books flat. The books will last longer that way, and your library will be able to use its funds to buy a larger number of books for you to read.

Also, librarians usually like suggestions about new books and magazines. They want to know what you like to read.

I do take very good care of them and I'm responsible for returning them in their prior condition. I'm basically reading books and watching DVD's for free and I'm grateful! It saves me a lot of money.

I also borrow books and movies for my 5 year old son. He is not nearly as careful however, and just last night scratched a DVD very badly while trying to get it out of the case. It was an accident, but regardless, I will be taking it to the library and offering to replace it.

OH DEAR!!! you have to take care of the library books even if they are not yours...as well as other stuff that you use that doesn't belong to you ...trust me this is a good practise and you'll be glad you did.

Yes because even though they are not your's you need to act like they are because other people will check them out after you. Plus, if you don't take care of them the library will make you pay for them.

I am an avid reader & I always take care of the library books along with any other book I use. My momma taught me to respect another persons possessions as well as my own. I've passed that along to my own children & grandchildren.

I treat them just about as I would treat any other book. A little wear is not a big deal, but if you mistreat a library book and damage it the library may charge you to replace the book.

Yes of course! Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I take care of other folks stuff as if it were mine, because frankly I expect you to do the same thing with my stuff when I lend it to you.
