Today when I was at the gym, I saw a man doing lat pull-downs in a way that I was told never to do at physical therapy. He was doing them behind the back instead of in front, which can potentially be harmful to the shoulders. I felt bad that he might be harming himself, but I also didn't feel like random commentary from a stranger would be welcome. What do you think?

Tell someone on staff. Most gyms have trainers who wander the area to make sure people aren't doing something that could cause them to potentially hurt themselves. If you can't find any staff on the floor, then tell the receptionist at the front. In all likely hood though, the reception person isn't going to do much about it. Someone working the floor is your best bet.

Well, if you approach him he will either be offended that someone is telling him how to work out, or he'll take the opportunity to try and get to know you. Men at the gym have that mentality.

(I guess that, at the end of the day, you determine whether the person is someone you care about enough to show them the right way as opposed to the wrong. I mean, at one time in my life I didn't really have much human contact, so if something like that would've happened to me I would've thought, "Wow... No one talks to me except to scrutinize..." I know that's not the right way to take it, but that's probably how it would've went down.)

Working out after having an injury is different than working out without one. His trainer may have told him to work out the way he was doing. Ask one of the trainers there what is the proper way and then point him out.

Could you tell the owner or manager of the gym? They hate to see people get injuries.

I wouldn't say anything to him--he might have a 'tude. If there was another machine right next to him, go over to it and do the exercises the right way, so he can see you and possibly think to himself, "Hmm, maybe I'm doing this wrong..."

I see people doing weights incorrect at the gym all the time. Let it go!

LOTS of people lift weights incorrectly. I tried helping one older guy who was obviously clueless and about to rip his back in half, but he was an @ss about it.

Honestly, you just have to let it go. They'll figure it out eventually, or get hurt trying.

Great question!

I would not confront him. If he looked like he knew what he was doing, chances are he is a very avid exerciser and has developed a routine of his own.

Discuss the situation with the gym manager and let her/him take it from there.

I'd point it out to one of the gym's trainers and ask them to check it out.
