I totally think so. But only because so many people are changing from their current favs because he is doing so well. I have been a Johnson fan since I started watching NASCAR and I will be a Johnson fan till the day he retires.

I'm a huge Jimmie Johnson fan but I don't see him replacing Jeff Gordon as the 2nd most popular driver for as long as he's still racing. There will probably come a time after Jeff retires that JJ will inherit some of his fans, much like Jr did when Dale Sr passed away. Right now I see Gordon's fan base almost growing because of the historical significance of his career and continued success.

I'm sorry PAPABILL, I really respect your opinions and enjoy your insight but I strongly disagree that Jimmie is not in the top 100 drivers of all time. He is easily in the top 25 if the likes of Tony Stewart and Mark Martin are. Jimmie is already 21st on the all time win list and is only 3 wins behind Tony Stewart even though Smoke has raced 3 full seasons more than him. He is also currently 11th all time for winning percentage, at 13.62%. In 5 full seasons he has never finished worse than 5th, been the runner up twice and won the championship last year. What's a driver have to do to make your top 100? As far as not being in the same class as Gordon, I agree he doesn't have the history yet BUT he has beat Jeff, and every other driver for that matter, in EVERY major statistical category except for poles since 2002 (his first full season). Check out the link below to see how he stacks up against Gordon and Stewart heads up, both solid top 25 drivers all time.

Johnson ,though a good driver, is not in the same class as Gordon.
Having followed this sport for 40 years and seen drivers come and go Johnson at this point of his career has not cracked the top 100 of greatest drivers of all times.
Today he is one of the best, and he is getting more popular. But he is not the most popular now nor has he passed Gordon for second most popular.

No matter whoever becomes the most popular, Gordon has the wins and Championships to be one of NASCAR's greatest drivers. And with several more years left in his career, it will be hard for anyone, even the most ignorant NASCAR fan to argue that point..... especially if Gordon wins the Championship this year. Gordon is almost certain to make 3rd on the ALL TIME WIN list and be 3rd for all time Championships. I guess as far as stats go..... that would make him 3rd ALL TIME GREATEST?????

Not likely to happen. Jimmie Johnson is a good driver (on an excellent team) but manages to project no personality whatsoever. In interviews it's like seeing a department store mannequin come to life.

In the middle of the '06 season, Johnson was a guest on "Trackside." He talked for about 45 minutes and managed not to say one interesting thing. It was an amazing performance.

NASCAR fans like to able to relate to their drivers personality-wise. Johnson did pick up some "bandwagon" fans while leading in points, and then winning the championship, last year. Before that I'd say I saw more Elliott Sadler shirts, caps, and stickers than Johnson stuff.

No, I don't think so yet. He is my favorite driver, but he needs a bit more personality on camera. He just needs to loosen up a bit. I have heard that he can be funny and party hard in private with his friends.

As for his eyebrows. That is hilarious. Jeff Gordon has the biggest caterpillars for eyebrows in NASCAR. I have never seen Jimmie have a unibrow.

Unabrow as the sencond most popular driver? LOL. Not a chance. Fans either love Jeff Gordon or hate him,so he'll always be popular. Go Jeff Go.

I think that since Jeff has been around so long and has aquired many fans along the way, he still holds that spot, but in my opinion, they both deserve top ratings. As long as 1 of them wins, I am happy...when they finish 1 & 2, it's been a great day because that means Stewart finished behind them! I am a fan of both Jeff and Jimmie. This has been an excting season for me!

He WILL be the top driver at HMS when Jeff retires in a few years. Jr still will not be a good driver. Kyle should not have been let go.

I WISH! BEING A JOHNSON FAN, HE IS AN EXCELLENT DRIVER BUT HONESTLY GORDON WOULD COME BEFORE HIM. NOR SURE WHY JR HAS BEEN VOTED, OH YEAH, BECAUSE OF HIS FATHER. WHO CARES ABOUT HIS EYE BROWS?? HE IS A GREAT DRIVER, THIS IS NASCAR, THAT'S WHAT IT'S ABOUT. NOT WHAT HE LOOKS LIKE
