I used to live in NYC and I travel there often but I don't take cabs. They are too expensive. I am frugal so I take public transportation like the subway (train) and the bus.
Anyway, when you are hailing for a cab, you yell "TAXI!" raising your arm up standing on the edge of the sidewalk, so other taxis can hear and see you. They can comprehend you this way better than saying "CAB!"
When you are communicating with other people, it's easier to say "I'll get you a cab" or "I'll call you a cab." than taxi.

It's a bit like the pronunciation of either you use the one you want. I think taxi is most used in UK and cab in the States

A former taxi driver friend of mine used to say most customers called it a taxi, most drivers called it a cab.

I would imagine if youre traveling with high society you would hail a cab. If your hanging with your buds, I would assume it would be to flag down a taxi. Either way they mean the same thing so it doesn't matter.
