Go ahead and feed it to the dog, then when it's almost gone, buy whatever premium food you decide on and gradually mix it with the remaining Puppy Chow until the puppy has been completely switched over to the new food. It's not going to kill your dog to eat one bag.Millions of people feed it to their puppies with no ill effects. If you can afford to waste it,then by all means ,give it away and start over.

Here is what you need to know about dog food. Look at the ingredients listed on the bag ( back or side.) If you see corn or corn meal ( anything corn really) in the ingredients ESPECIALLY if its in the first 3 ingredients, you should not buy the food. This is the majority of the food you will find. Even major petstores dont usually sell high quality food. Find a litte pet store, they usually have the better stuff. Here is why: Corn does not digest ( im sure you personally know this) so if the food is mostly corn ( you know how much is in it because they put the ingredients in order on the bag according to how much is in the product) your dog wont get much nutrients and will be essentially hungry alot more, pooping alot more and alot softer, and they well be way less healthy. Any food that is mostly chicken, turkey, even beef are good choices. They also usually include barley or rice. But check the ingredient list because alot say chicken or beef on the front but only have a tiny amount. I buy a brand called professional but Im not sure if its available everywhere. PS make sure you dont buy large breed puppy food.

It won't harm your dog but it isn't a very good food. They spend lots on advertising and we all have to admit they have some great ads!
You can donate the bag of food to a rescue group, shelter and even some Vet clinics will take the donation. Or, you can buy a quality food and mix the two until all the Purina is gone and then stick to feeding the quality food.
Try Canidae, Natures' Recipe, Taste of the Wild,..... There are many, many quality foods out there.

It's not the absolute worst food, but it's not nearly the best either... You want to look for a food that has the first ingredient a protein chicken or chicken meal, something like that. Not a corn, poultry meal, meat meal, or bone meal. You just don't know what that is. I mean poultry is a big category. Anyway. You could offer it to a local shelter or rescue. Or return the bag if it isn't opened. If you want to save money, the cheapest premium food is Purina One. I prefer Nutro Natural Choice.
Here's an article about choosing dog food.

Beneful is another brand you want to stay away from. As well as kibbles and bits. It's just not nutrionally balanced and healthy for your dog. Alway check the food labels.

Wow those were some strong answers. There always seems to be a better diet somewhere. If it's not some premium food it a natural diet. Purina is one of the top dog foods (as in big food campanies). Big does't always mean it's bad (or best). Purina, Hills, and Iams are my big three that are good foods. Doesn't mean they are the best but it's what I feed my dog, what my vet likes and my dog seems to love it. They provide a balanced diets and if your dog is a puppy in a few months you'll be buying a new bag of adult food. Next time go to a pet store not the grocery store and ask the people there what they recommend feed your dog or ask your vet what they think is a good basic food. You don't have to throw away your food. If your dog gets diarreha or an allergic reaction then think about changing it. Otherwise you're fine with your choice.

If it is unopened, the store may be willing to take it back or exchange it for something else.
If not, you could always donate it to the Humane Society or a local rescue/shelter. Caring for all their animals is very expensive and I'm sure they would appreciate the food.
It's great that you are wanting to feed your puppy the best thing you can!

I go to a private pet food store and get Orijen its really natural and healthy, you can also get vet brand foods like medi-cal or royal canin. In general, if you really want to feed the best, dont buy any brand readily available in superstores or grocery stores, they have fillers to make the food cheaper. Buy new food from a pet store and then mix it with the food you bought for a week or 2 to allow a smooth transition. just changing brand can cause dogs to get upset stomachs and diarrhea

You can donate it to your local shelter who would be thankful to receive any food donations.
Unfortunately, Purina is garbage... just like all the other foods sold at grocery stores and pet shops like petsmart and petco. Stay away!!

Don't listen to these people, dogs have been eating Purina foods for years and they have done just fine.
If you ask 100 random people about which dog food is best you will get many different answers because dog food is a hot subject. Feed your dog what you are able to afford and do not worry about other people's opinion about dog food.

It is one of the worst on the market. You can donate it to the local shelter. They are usually always in need of food and it really doesn't matter to them if its top quality or not. They need donations and will appreciate it.
