Only you can decide. If his quality of life is diminsihed then maybe it is time to let him go. Don't feel bad about it. Helping our 4 legged friends out of pain is something we do FOR them, not TO them. Be at peace with your decision and be glad you had all those years together. He knows you love him.
I am sorry you are going through this.Whatever you decide... it's ok.

Quality is more important than quantity when it comes to life. Do you think he's happy and isn't in pain. Do you think he'll handle the drugs.
On the flip side, can you really afford the cost of the proper treatment? The time to care for him?
If he's has renal failure I would put him down, I wouldn't imagine that as being very comfortable or painless.

Well this is a really tough decision that a lot of us have faced. I had a cat with stomach cancer and I decided the best thing was to put her to sleep because I didn't want her to be in pain and suffering anymore. It was really hard, but I knew it was the best thing for her.
This is personal decision. If you feel that you are ready to let him go, or that you think he's ready to be let go, put him down. If not, let him live as long as possible and try to enjoy what time you have left with him.
Hope the best for you and your dog.

Only you can decide - its a horrible decision to make. It is trying to balance up the quality versus the quantity of life versus the role that your dog plays in your family home. What ever decision you make will be the right one, for this time.
Click on this link if you want to read a nice (but very very sad) poem about the situation you are in.

In most cases withthe older dogs there is no cure they can give meds to ease the pain and proling her life but usually not a quality of life
here is a poem that might help
PUT ME TO REST
Time to let me go my friend,
Because my life no-one can mend,
Its better to let me go this way,
Than watch me suffer night and day.
I'm happy to go, my time has come,
My quality of life is no longer fun,
Ive been so ill, so its not a bad thing,
To let me go forever resting.
Stay with me till I drift away,
Fast asleep forever I pray,
To relieve me from suffering and pain,
What more can I ask from my best friend.
Don't be sad, I'll be free from pain,
Never to be ill ever again,
I know you'll miss me being there,
But all the memories you have to share.
Thankyou for being my best friend,
And all my needs that you did tend,
Try not to be sad, try not to cry,
Now's the time to say GOODBYE

I'm really sorry to be so blatant but is it not better for him to go now with his dignity in tact, if I were in your shoes that is what I would do although it would be very heart breaking it would be in HIS best interest.
We had to make that decision with our GSD he was 12 started having fits and his hips started to go. We couldn't let our big boy be degraded by loosing control of himself etc he was such a powerful intimidating dog in his day and did his job of protector, cuddle pup and friend so well we did what we thought was best and let him go before he got too bad because it does not get better for them it can only go one way and your just prolonging their death really by pumping them full of stuff to keep them going.
I hope you follow your heart and do what you feel is best for your dog (not you). Good luck and you have my greatest sympathy xx xx

I am so sorry about your dog. I cant imagine what it would be like loosing my dog. Ilm sorry to say... but I think he needs to be put down. Even dogs without a sickness only live to 12. I'm sure he has lived a long happy life with you. It sounds like you are replacing your dog but if you dont have another dog I reccomend getting another dog(same breed) and naming it after him.
