In just about all states there are tax free high yield college funds that you can open. Theyre like savings accounts.

You can also save up a couple hundred dollars at a time and buy him CD's they have really good rates, nearly 4%.

Go in and talk to a banker, they will help you.

My fiance and I were living paycheck to paycheck and struggling until we moved and I was able to get my old job back. Nowadays, one working parent is usually not enough. You can sign up for WIC, try for support from the state, shop for deals (thrift stores and generic grocery items), or get a job if you can. I have my mother watch our baby when we're both at work so we dont have to worry about childcare expenses. Even just working part-time should be a big help. We are now living comfortably (not living large, but comfortably). We are able to pay bills, pay for groceries, etc with ease and are able to save up for a new car now. All because I went back to work.

This is a three person household, going on four...have you tried to get any assistance from the county/state?

You can also just put away $5 or $10 here and there...it's not much but sometimes it can really help.

Could you work part time when he's not working?

Look for a WIC program in your city. They will help with food while you're pregnant (milk, eggs, cheese, cereal), formula and juice for your six month old, and when your new one is born, they'll help with him/her too.

And I'm not trying to be offensive, but $1600 a month is not enough to raise a family of four on anywhere in the US. Check on getting some unemployment or welfare benefits for you and your children's sake.

Don't be too proud to buy used. I buy my daughter's clothes from used consignment sales and they are adorable. Some even still have the original tags on them. They grow out of clothes so quickly. Also, when you have people who offer to help, let them. This Christmas, if you celebrate it, tell family members what they can buy to help you with the costs. They would much rather buy something you will use, I promise.
