Starting with Christianity - particularly Catholicism; frm a young age I had a problem with it, there were many aspects I simply did not agree with & found it extremely difficult to follow. I was never given a choice, I was forced to go along with it, attend church, sunday school etc; threatened with severe punishment if I uttered a word of doubt. I know that this is not an unusual experience, particularly where I live. As children we were told this is how it is, no-one dared express anything but true devotion. The Bible says those who do not believe will go to hell (or be left behind to experience hell on earth).

Similarly the Qu'ran states -

As to those who reject Faith, it is the same to them whether thou warn them or do not; they will not believe.
2:7 God hath set a seal on their hearts and on their hearing, and on their eyes is a veil; great is the penalty they incur'
Some more extreme views also consider non believers as infidels.

It's all about control. Fear and threat of punishment keeps the population docile and less likely to revolt against the powers that be. Fundamentalist religion is a great tool of the elite.

Also, those in control like to "divide and conquer". Giving the masses a "them" to hate helps the cause of the ruling class as well. Weapons of mass distraction...

I do believe in a Divine presence. It is NOT any of those things. It is pure love and light.

For thousands of years the bible has been used as a means of control. Power is an amazing tool, fear is used to manipulate. Considering so many 'bible stories' were written after the alleged Jesus' death, its pretty obvious that these parables and feel good stories would have a moral to them.

Personally, I dont hold with any of the preachings of the bible or any other organised religions propaganda. People should live their lives the best way they can, as long as you are a decent person you have no need to have meaningless drivel rammed down your throat. We all know about morality, we all know right from wrong. You dont need a book to tell you not to take anothers life, with reagards to coveting thy neighbours ***...well..actually my neighbour has a very nice ***....he works out a lot...so sue me Ive 'sinned' :)

Because it's all to do with servitude. bringing up children with the fear of a dreadful afterlife is little more than child abuse. The bible is littered with examples of child abuse, Abraham preparing to slaughter his own son is one that springs to mind. The god of the old testament was in the habit of killing children with a disturbing regularity. Richard Dawkins rightly points out in his book "The God Delusion" that there is no such thing as a catholic/protestant/muslim child. They are far too young to make a rational decision about such things. All religeons have to operate through fear as the thing they are selling ie God just wouldn't be bought.

The two biggest religions are really nothing more than point scoring bullies and ought to be treated with contempt as being exaltly what they refer non-believers as being...infidels. As that is exactly what they are.....complete and utter infidels.

Fear is a powerful motivator. It works well on most people.

If you had a tool that could guarantee success 8 times out of 10, would you use it?

I don't think it's so much a question of why the world's two biggest religions try to frighten us into believing; I think it's more that they are the two biggest religions BECAUSE they frighten people into believing.

Fear is only for those who do not understand like the children. If you explain the dangers they will not understand.

For those who understand, there's no fear. They know what is good for them and choose accordingly.
