The minerals found in soil are, in order of particle size, sand, silt & clay the smallest.
Optimum soil mineral percentages are: Sand 30-50%, Silt 30-50%, Clay 20-30% that are found in midrange loam.
Sandy loam is just outside of the optimal loam level with more large particles. Silty loam and clay loam are the other common classes.
The particles come from the wearing of the parent rock. Different rocks wear into one of the three ranges of particle size. Because the possible combinations are enormous most people use a soil triangle when calculating their soil type.

Loam is the term used for optimal soil mineral percentages with adequate organics to provide good soil structure. Good soil must have all four elements; balanced minerals, air, water, & organic matter (OM). Balanced minerals includes all three of these types of particles in relatively equal amounts.

Type of soil ... characteristics Sandy soil ... if you grab a handful of soil and squeeze it and it just falls apart when you open your hand, it is sandy. Sandy soils are very grainy. Clay soil ... if your handful stays together in a solid lump, it's probably clay. You can tell clay because it's very slippery when wet. Loamy soil ... your handful of soil will stay together for a bit, then fall apart in chunks. The soil looks rich; sometimes you can see organic material in it. Loam soil is great for growing things, usually. Sandy and Clay soils can both be improved by adding organic material.
