San Diego is a fairly nice city, much, much better than Los Angeles. I'm not sure if the Boxer is at 32nd Street Naval Station or over on Coronado Island at North Island Naval Air Station.
32nd Street is a massive base with a terrible area outside the base (National City). You'll find all the amphibious ships down at the far end of the base.
Coronado is a beautiful place, mostly residential, with a small, central business district. There are very nice beaches on Coronado but the water is cold, cold, cold.

San Diego the city or the Naval Base? I can tell you that the city is amazing but I've never been to the naval base. There are so many things to do in San Diego if you leave the base. Pacific Beach and the Gaslamp are huge party scenes and the weather is always sunny.
We hear about when naval ships are coming and leaving all the time here in San Diego so I wouldn't worry about telling us this. This is a military town. That's obvious and it's not really a matter of national security whether we have naval ships here or when they are coming or going. There are naval ships here all the time. I'm sure you are bright.

If you pull in at the 32nd Street Naval Station there is a light rail line which will take you right to downtown San Diego. That last stop is Union Station. There is a large information booth right there with tons of information on what to see and where to go. San Diego is an amazing city with fine weather and one of the most positive attitudes towards the military of any place outside of Honolulu, Hawaii. Use the link below to get more info.

There are actually 5 Navy bases in San Diego. I know which one you are going to though. It's just like any other base. It's a good size so you can meet a lot of other military people from within the immediate area.

I hear the same as Mrs JVB: There is a lot of effort being made to build better housing in San Diego with the ultimate goal of having every home-ported sailor in a barracks room readily accessible to the waterfront. Fact of the matter is that almost nobody below E-5 could afford San Diego rent.
