Remeber - Xbox 360 is already working over the top. PS3 capabilities are yet to be seen, there are no games, that allow you full understanding of it's capabilities. Check "Heavenly Sword" graphics or "Resistance - The fall of men" - they are exclusives on PS3 - much better graphics, than Xbox 360 has to offer. I own "Call of Duty 3" and "Resistance: FOM". Resistance is much more beautiful. Here is the link to HD trailers:
Resistance: FOM -http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/748/748483/vids_1.html

Also, check this out:
PS3 will win the console war, no doubt. Xbox 360 and Wii are so weak from technological point of view, that in couple of years they won't be capable of dealing with serious graphics. GTA IV, for instance, isn't even announced for Wii - this toy won't be able to cope with the game's requirements. Xbox 360 is getting GTA IV, however, the game is going to be released on several DVDs - Xbox 360 owners will have to interrupt gaming process and switch discs (Rockstar complained about this issue). Only PS3 will have it on single BD-DVD.
Let's compare PS3 and XBOX 360:
A third of XBOX 360 (33%) are malfunctioning right from the start. PS3 return rate is only around 0.2%.
PS3 has 8 (7+1) kernels in Cell processor, Xbox 360 -only 3.
PS3 uses advanced tech called Blu-Ray, one disc can store up to 54 gb (in the future - up to 200 gb), Xbox 360 - regular dual layer DVD-9 (8.5GB). It's possible to get HD-DVD (max. - 30GB) for 360, but it'll cost you around 180$, in this case Xbox is going to be MUCH more expensive, than PS3.
Calculations per sec - PS3 - 51-billion-dot-product-operati... per second
Xbox 360 - 33.6-billion-dot-product-opera... per second
PS3 has full media support - USBs, built-in card reader (except 20 gb version), ability to use printer and so on.
Xbox 360 has USBs and only 2 memory slots.
PS3 supports up to 7 Bluetooth Controllers
Xbox 360 - up to 4 Controllers
PS3 - wi-fi included (except 20 gb version)
Xbox 360 - wi-fi will cost you around 100 $
Graphics are stronger in PS3, due to RSX chip, that was developed by Nvidia exclusively for PS3. To estimate its power (roughly) - take 6800 Ultra nvidia graphics card, multiply it by 2 - get a result, still PS3 stronger, because 6800 Ultra runs on 400 Mhz and RSX runs on 550 Mhz.
PS3 uses technology from AGEIA company. It does to physics of the game same thing GPU (videocard processor) does to graphics. This thing is on sale for PC(special card). The price is around 350$. There is no such thing in 360.
Xbox 360 is widely known for so-called "red ring of death" problem - it gets overheated easily. My PS3 was running for more than 8 hours non-stop with no problems. Sometimes Xbox 360 becomes so overheated, that thermopaste on CPU melts, drips on motherboard and successfully shortcircuits it.
Besides all of this, I've seen disassembled Xbox 360 - regular PC architecture - Billy Gates is an uninventive nerd (as usual).
When I saw disassembled PS3 - it was a surprise - smart architecture, good cooling (don't buy external PS3 coolers - they make everything worse - original system is good), etc.
In 2008 PS3 will get more than 300 games, including Metal Gear Solid 4, The Agent and other great exclusives. Here is the good link to the future PS3 releases. http://ps3.ign.com/index/release.html......
PS3 online is free, Xbox 360 - you have to pay.
There were reports, that 360 scratches discs. No reports on that in PS3.
In some countries people call Xbox 360 "Coffin 360".
The funniest thing, that right now there are no games for PS3, that show full potential of the console.
On PS3 you can install other OS, such as Linux Yellow Dog, Ubuntu and others. Sony officially lets you do it. There is no such thing in 360.
PS3 HDD can be replaced easily with any 2.5" SATA 5400 RPM HDD (used in laptops). 250 GB will cost you around 170$. In 360 you have to buy exclusive HDD, where 20GB will cost you 100$.
Sony expects PS3 to stay on the market for, at least, 7-10 years. Also Sony reduces price now. Soon there is going to be cheaper 40GB version of PS3.
Sony constantly upgrades PS3 software (free updates for OS) - you get new functions and improvements.
PS3 controller (sixaxis) has a motion control - you move controller - game responds. Wii has it, Xbox 360 - doesn't. PS3 controller is getting vibrocontroller soon (Dualshock 3).
I didn't mention Wii, because it's so weak, no point to talk about it. Leave it for kindergarten and casual games.

Both systems are backwards compatible. With the exception of the 40gb console, the PS3 covers about 95% of the games on PS2 and PS1. From what I gather, the 5% non-compatible games are obscure titles that no one really owns. The 40gb has no backwards compatibility at all.
As far as I know the XBox is 100% compatible.
But, listen to the dude who answered first with all the tech talk. The 360 MIGHT be the better buy today, but the PS3 will be the better buy from 2008 until the next generation of systems comes out.

Playstation and Xbox are both backwards compatible, you can play your old games on either one. The only reason i can see to buy an Xbox instead of a Ps3 is that the Xbox has more games, and they have Halo3, it's also a little bit cheaper. Other than that, the Ps3 is a much better machine, it's more powerful, capable of better graphics and faster processing, and it's way more reliable. all of the games are on blu-ray discs, which means they can be much longer and more detailed than the average game, plus you'll pay about a thousand bucks for a blu-ray player by itself, so why not pay $600 for a Ps3 and get a blu-ray player built in. I'm not sure if the Xbox has motion sensitive controls but the Ps3 does for sure. To sum it up, unless your a big Halo fan, get a Ps3.

ps3 is WORTH THE BUY!!!!
i'll list some of the reasons
- ps3 has a built-in blu-ray player
- ps3 has much more and better exclusives, most of them cant go to xbox 360 because it cant handle that many data(DVD- 8.5gb, blu-ray 50gb)
- online is free for ps3 not like 360
- ps3 will have over 300 games released by this spring
- when developers get used to the system, the graphics will be WAY better than 360. should take them a year to get used to it
- playstation home is coming out this spring, its a virtual community where you can hang out with friends and customize your own apartment which xbox doesnt have(FREE)
- ps3 is a true HD console. xbox 360 upscale games to 1080p and ps3 DISPLAY games up to 1080p
- built in Wi-Fi
- xbox 360: 33% hardware failure
ps3: .2% hardware failure(see the decimal? less than 1%!)
- rumble returns in spring 2008
- you can upgrade your harddrive without voiding warranties with any 2.5 HDD, which xbox cant because you have to buy a xbox HDD
(they actually have the step by step on how to upgrade it on playstation.com)
those are the ones that i know right off my mind but there are much more reason than this
Prices as of today:
ps3- 80gb: $599
60gb: $499
xbox 360(premium)- $399 (if you want the accessories that ps3 comes with, that would add up to over 700 dollars)

It is all just opinion. 360's are genereally focused more towards jsut the hardcore gamer with titles like gears of war. It does not put much of an emphasis on multimedia. The ps3, while not the most popular in terms of games is capable of somethings that the 360 is not for instance the blu ray player. It all comes down to what you will be using it for.

They are both good systems, but I like PS3 better.
It is just a better system and it has its roots from the most successful system of all time (PS2).
Remember, PS2 got off to sluggish start as well but ended up murdering N64 and Sega Dreamcast.
Sony is in it for the long haul and the games lately have been amazing. Folklore comes out tomorrow and I can't wait. Go with the PS3, it is just capable of so much more !
Good Luck in your decision.

well, right now they are both backwards-compatible, but sony plans to STOP the ps2 backwards compatibility on the ps3. so the xbox 360 is now officially the better buy.
the good stuff about each system:
xbox 360-
has better games (halo 3, forza 2, bioshock, viva pinata, etc.)
cheaper ($279.99-$449.99)
funner
xbox live is awesome
upscales DVDs to a higher definition (better picture)
plays xbox games
ps3-
has a small failure rate (0.2%, but it still freezes)
free wifi
plays blu-ray
upscales DVDs to a higher definition (better picture)
plays ps2 games RIGHT NOW.
now the bad parts:
xbox 360-
red ring of death/ overheating
ps3:
expensive ($499.99-$599.99)
barely any games out (not even any good ones)
Blu-Ray is a dying format, just like HD DVD (don't buy either)
so they are both good and bad. If you want them, buy both. if just one, then stick with xbox 360 because it is selling a lot better than ps3 and who knows if ps3 would even be out longer since the poor sales. xbox 360 sold over 11 million; ps3 just over 4 million. I pick xbox 360. I think you should too.
