Well, the obvious difference is the memory capacity. Today's games are so huge in size, that there needs to be an infinite amount of memory on a console for it to hold it all. Down the road you'll be getting more games, which means more saving, and more memory will be eaten up.
Not to mention there's supposedly only 2 USB slots...that's not good if you have controllers that need those slots, and you have more than two players...it'd suck as a party console because you'd need to charge them up before you can play them, and it'd take a while with only 2 ports! haha
My brother has the original ps3, and he is in love with it. If there are less features on a ps3 that is lower in memory, why get it? Also, it CAN play ps2 games, because my brother has done it, and he's happy with it. The only reasonable answer would be due to price difference, but nowadays, it'll probably be the same price, if not more, than the 60 GB ps3....
If I were you, I'd go with the original. It'll be good to you in the long run.

The 40gb PS3 loses a lot of the functionality that the 60gb has. It has no memory card slots, less USB ports and no backwards compatibility. I'm not sure, but it may not have built-in WiFi either.
Between game demos, movie trailers, videos and music, its very easy to fill up the PS3s hard drive. You'll want an additional 20gbs to play around with. Plus, a lot of these games (Heavenly Sword, Oblivion, Ninja Gaiden, Warhawk) run smoother if you download game files to your hard drive. You don't want to lose that.
It's better to have and not need than to need and not have. So, If you can get your hands on the 60, get the 60.

The 40 gig
Hmmm Ok most of what people said. Is correct to a point. The main considerations are. It is not compatible with PS2 games. That's not an issue to me. I have no ps2 games. It can play PS1 games.
As to it only having 2 usb ports. Someone said it wouldn't be much of a gaming machine for when friends are over. The ports are used to charge the controllers. The controllers are wireless. And it supports up to 7 controllers

As far as backwards compatibility goes the 40gb version still supports ps1 games but no longer supports ps2 games as removing the required hardware cut production costs of the new ps3 significantly.
The new ps3 has no more memory stick card readers and the number of usb ports has been reduced to 2.

40GB will have 2 USB ports instead 4, no built-in card readed. It'll have wi-fi. If you don't care for PS2 games - it's the same PS3. HDD can be replaced with any 5400RPM, SATA, 2.5" HDD (laptop kind). 40GB will be able to run PS1 games. By eye - it has chrome trim, but it has matte finish.
