How about:
"The stories about poor medical treatment of injured and wounded military personnel defamed an entire medical staff by not pointing out that those patients affected were not in the hospital, but in a medical holding company barracks awaiting return to duty, discharge, or medical retirement.
The reporting and slant of the stories demonstrated the almost total lack of knowledge of the military medical system by those writing the stories. All of the investigations conducted on this matter, including hearings done by committees from both houses of the Congress, clearly showed that the care given to the patients was first-rate. What was at issue was the deplorable condition of the barracks building where those who had completed acute care were being housed while awaiting appearance at medical and physical evaluation boards or movement to veterans' hospitals or to home. "
Be bold. Fight the "conventional wisdom" which was really poor reporting and fact-finding.

How about starting with something like this:

"Our country has abandoned its injured heroes. As reported in the Washington Post (cite the exact date, title of the article), veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan for medical treatment at Walter Reed Medical Center are housed in substandard conditions."

"The reports of poor medical treatment at Walther Redd hospital are exaggerated and politically motivated. In fact the Democrats after holding 'hearings' on the issue - refused to allocate one penny to repair the problems in the one part of the one building that had gotten the media attention."
