the role of a smoother is to emphasize agreement. the person can listen empathetically and understand.
ie. not tell the upset person what they are doing wrong or what they 'should' do.
stay in empathy. don't try to fix or solve anything. just listen and understand. ie just help the person come down off their emotional situation so they can come to the rational.
when a person is upset, they are not operating in the rational zone. you can't talk reason. you have to use active and reflective listening and empathy to help them process the emotion before they can get to reason.
