I was told not to bath my new pup. She is nw 12 weeks old. She got quit dirty today. She is a Dachshund, and has long hair, and today got her ears in her food, and now the tips are all dirty. Also we took her down to the park along with our other dog, and she ended up somehow gettin into sap, and she got it on her face.
I was told though, that it is not good to bath a young pup. I heard they get scared, and their knees lock up, is this true??

Can I give my pup a bath??
Or will it hurt her in the long run?
I know u need to have the water, not to warm or cold, like a baby's bottle, and have a warm towel ready for her... sometimes from the dryer since it's cold here, and sometimes blow dry her on low, and ONLY use puppy shampoo, and to be careful around the face, and let the water run down, not up... But are those the only precausions??

Yes, you can bathe your pup. It will not hurt her. The best way is to wet her down, apply the shampoo, lather her up and then rinse her off. I wouldn't try washing her in a bathtub full of water. Use warm water like you said and you can blow dry her on low heat with a blow dryer on low speed. Use a cotton ball moistened with alcohol to wipe the inside of the ears when you have finished. This will clean the ears and help to dry any water that may have gotten in.

She is old enough to get her started with learning what a bath is. I cannot think of anything wrong as she is about 3 months old now. You know all the basics it appears. Main thing is not to let her get "chilled" after the bath.

Be very careful about water around her head/ears. When moisture gets inside the ears it can set up a yeast infection. For now just clean the outside and tips that got dirty. Yep, you will want to often do a spot bath of the ends of ears, etc.

First bath, keep short and simple and a treat or two. Just to get pup use to the water and how much fun it can be. If small enough use the sink as easier on the back and maybe less scairy. Do not forget the nail trimming and a good look inside the ears.

Not sure why someone told you that?? It is easier long term if you start the bathing and grooming young and they get use to it!! Sometimes you can just use wash cloth to spot clean her, especially in cold weather. And to clean inside the ears so water does not get down inside!! They also make special cleansing cloths for inside ears!

Sure you can! There OK to have a bath now. Just be careful and dont get water or soap in the pups ears or eyes. You can wash the face with a warm wash cloth.

Make sure they are warm after the bath. I have a 15 week old pup myself and he already has had a few baths because he rolled in dirt! LOL

As long as you keep her warm and the water out of her eyes and ears it shouldn't be a problem. You can put cotton balls loosly in her ears to keep the water out (make sure you remove them afterwards). If you put a towel in the bottom of the sink for her to stand on, she'll be less scared. I have never heard of a dogs knees locking up because they were scared in a bath. The blow dryer might scare her (my 2 year old Collies STILL hate it) - doxies hair is so short you could probalby towel dry her really good and put her in her bed with a towel fresh out of the dryer for a little while.

yes you can give your pup a bath. It may get sacared just talk to it and reasure it. Blowdrying would help get any dead hair out.
YOu should first try to brush it to get any knots out.
the thing about knoees locking is a lie I have bathed pups at 2 weeks old and older.
keep teh water out of the ears.

you have it pretty covered. I think you should add some treats in there. While you are bathing her and talking nicely to her, have someone else giver her yummy treats to let her know that bathtime is not that bad.
Use the precautions you have mentioned, and don't try to scrub her skin, just wash her hair gently.
Also, to make sure that her skin does not dry out, add a little oil to her food... i mean alittle... at her next meal time.

Best of luck.

I don't see how it wouldn' be okay. I got my dog when she was 8 weeks old and I gave her a bath when I got home. Puppys get dirty. If they aren't housetrained, they smell like puppy-poo. I say give her a bath.

Yup, its perfectly alright to give your stinky pup a bath. :) We asked our vet this the other day (our pup is 3 months) and she said it was fine.
