When I do crunches, if I go past a certain point, it feels like part of my chest muscle wall is popping up and over a rib (the right one under the right breast). I stop, can put my fingers on it, and if I breathe very shallow it goes away. This has been happening for 2 years. Last time I brought it up my dr at the time said I was too fat for crunches (195 lbs, 5'5") and that it was too bad.

Now, I've lost 20 lbs since then (well, 30, since I gained 10 before losing) and I'm STILL having the problem. What gives? No pain otherwise. Thanks!

You are correct about crunches not helping you lose fat. I'm doing them because I wanted to strengthen the so-called core area. I have lost belly fat -- still have some, but there is a difference now. TIA.

I'd say it's a bad idea to continue doing crunches if this is happening. Perhaps you can find some other exercises that don't aggravate this problem. And go back to a doctor that will help you figure out what the problem is. Maybe your doctor can refer you to physical therapy, where you can learn to work out without exacerbating whatever problem you have.

P.S. Good for you for losing weight. I wish you good health.

Losing weight won't fix this "problem" if you aren't losing it in the right places. So if enough of your "fat" area is still there, then it will persist.
