PADUA, Italy - An Italian priest who publicly declared his love for a woman has lost his job, the diocese said Tuesday.

The Rev. Sante Sguotti can no longer work as pastor in his Monterosso parish and cannot hear confessions from the faithful, the diocese of Padua said in a statement. Sguotti remains a priest and can celebrate Mass, however.

Sguotti made headlines in August when he went on national television to say he was in love with a woman and wanted to be her boyfriend publicly while remaining chaste.

some time to a woman and had asked for a dispensation to go out with her."

Men in the Eastern rite of the Catholic church who are married can become priests, and the Vatican has accepted into the priesthood some married Anglican priests who converted to Catholicism.

But the Vatican has constantly refused to relax the celibacy requirement for Latin rite priests.
Should Priests be allowed to Marry? I say yes.

Aren't they human beings..
If prophets had wives, some more than one, why should they be denied such privilege. They have a heart too and to love the opposite one is but natural.

The way I understand it the priests are supposed to be married to God. When they enter the priest hood they take a vow of celibacy, and understand what this means to their life, so if they cant do tht they should not become priests its that simple.

Nuns are the same way. Dont take the vow if you dont want to live the life. Its been that way for hundreds of years, why change it now.

But I guess it would save lots of poor altar boys from being raped and defiled.

Sorry but I call it as I see it.

Blessings,
Aviana

No he should not be removed.

First of all, he is remaining chaste.

Second of all, the celibacy rule used to optional even for Catholics.
It was changed as a political move so that rich priests could not have children to inhered their lands (thus the church got everything when he died).

What a priest does in his own privacy is his own business...!!! Jesus love to fool around with a lot of women. He bunk with them and they fed him. In fact, he is known to enjoy having his feet extensively kissed by a prostitute in public at a party in which prostitutes were invited, also. Jesus even reproached his male host for not doing the some to him!

If the priest goes public about his sexual life, hey more power to him! It is unfair to assume that all or most priests are child abusers, but they all do have a secret sexual life of some sort! For God's sake, we are all humans, so was Jesus!

Excellent question C&C.
I agree with you, priests should be allowed to lead normal lives so that they can see the many problems that their parishoners face every day. How else can they be expected to give advice otherwise?
Plus, as some of the other answerers state, it might help to avoid some of the 'deviant' sex problems that have been so recently in the news.

Yes, priest should be allowed to marry, and probably ought to be required to marry. Blame the 4th century writings of St Augustine for this mess.

Thats why I can't stand catholics. Its pathetic to go against nature. I mean come on, its normal to have feelings for the opposite sex. What do they expect, for a priest not to be around women his whole life and go against what nature intended? If they went by the bible they would know God made people to be together. Thats why he made Adam a partner.

I don't see why they cannot be married. I do not remember reading in the Bible that a priest cannot be married.

Peter was married and yet he was the first Pope of the church.
