Helen, we don't have any scientific proof for any of it.
Some people believe that there is an afterlife. Some of those people believe what your afterlife is like depends upon what you did or what you believed in when you were alive on this earth. For example, most Christians believe that if you believed that Jesus Christ was the son of God, who was cruicified and died to take away the sins of the world, and you were baptised, then you go immediately to heaven--eternal unity with God. If you don't believe those things, then, according to some Christians, you go to hell -- eternal separation from God; others don't know or don't care.
Some religions believe you are reincarnated -- you take on another life form on this earth -- after a period of rest. And the progress you make in this life helps determine the form you take in the next.
Some people believe that there is no heaven or hell, but just a "next" form of existence--a new universe sort of.
Some people believe that nothing happens, that your body ceases brain function and you poof out of existence.
Regardless of what others believe, it's most likely that your grandmother is out of pain, either existing in another place or simply not existing at all. But we only can truly know what we observe, what conclusions we can make from observation, and what we believe in our hearts. I hope your heart, although sad, is still full of love for her.

I really believe that she is out of pain. It just depends upon what you or your family believe as to where she is. Some people believe that when people die, that's it; the end with no heaven or hell. That she is no longer cognizant of this world, it's pain, drama etc..,
Some people believe in heaven, where no one is ever sick, scared, hungry or hurt again.
Some people believe in reincarnation, where we come back and evolve and correct any mistakes we made in the last life until we get it right. Once we get it right, then we go to a heaven like place.
Either way, she is at peace now. I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm going to come at you with some basic spiritualist knowledge.
Your grandmother simply left her body and the pain with it. After she goes into the Light to "check in" with God, she can go anywhere she wants and even attend her own funeral. Rest easy in the knowledge that she has been set free, and is no-doubt having a wonderful time.
There is no hell... that is a fabrication of some monks trying to simplify some fairly elaborate doctrine for masses of uneducated people. Quite frankly, depending on our own point of view and how we are manifesting our realities... THIS physical reality is hell. We have nothing whatsoever to fear about the death experience... we've all been through it many times before. When you step into the Light, you are restored to your perfect prime-of-life form. Picture your grandmother at about age 30.
Her immediate experience in the post-life phase depends on how she went out. For example in most alzheimer's, parkinson's and other scenarios where people check-out very slowly and spend a lot of time sleeping... they tend to arrive on the other side in what appears to be a very familiar envoronment... could look like their old home or a convalescent home. People who die suddenly in an accident may need to be directed into the Light. Some people may spend a while in a "convalescent home" on the other side until they become accustomed to the idea that they are between lives. It is very easy to get the ghosts of small children to cross over into the Light by telling them that their grandmothers are waiting for them inside the Light. In short, you get whatever scenario you need to help you to adjust.
At some point, everyone gets to decide what to do next.
Some decide to go into training to be spirit guides, and some go into the review process to help them decide what they want to do with their next life... what lessons were learned and which need repeating, pick their parents, pick the kind of bodies they want... you get the idea.
The generation that is currently incarnate now is the last to experience bloodline karma. After this, we all get to pick everything from completely different stock without having to deal with our past karmas from past-life family relationships.

people don't go anywhere when they die. your body is buried or cremated. and yes the pain ends when you die-your nerves no longer function, so there are no pain receptors to transmit the currents to your brain (which no longer functions anyway).

If she isn't a christian, then she is in a lot of pain and suffering in hell.
