move on because trying to correct everything that is wrong (in your opinion) with the question would require a 5,000 word treatise?

Mine is: the questions that are so full of fundamentalist superstition and calvinism (if a pygmie in deepest Africa dies never having heard the name Jesus, too bad: he's roasting in hell) that untangling it all would take hours.

I sorta feel like those surgeons who are presented with a sick person, open him or her up, then find so much cancer, they just close them back up and send them home with good drugs and a prayer.

What are the questions like that for you?

The ones that get like 6 things wrong in a single sentence. For example
"Scientists claim dinosaurs were created by a big bang but when we make explosions things get destroyed because of the second law of thermodynamics."

Obviously, I've never seen that particular sentence, but I think you get the idea.

I do not know for sure that the Pygmies will go to hell. Now if you read the Bible you see that during the millennium of Jesus Christ reign on earth that people be given a chance to come to Christ. I think that a person who has not heard the word of God, he is given the chance to accept or deny Jesus. My mother died of cancer after an eight year fight, at the end there was nothing anyone could do, she went to Heaven. What is your true belief? Mine is Christianity, an proud of it. I have asked questions at a time in my life when I could not see but my eyes are open.

Hi Jon,

I run into this quite a lot, it seems.

Ya know, I can respect a belief and appreciate another faith, or another angle on Christianity, but I have a hard time being calm when I read things like how great "God's retirement plan" is, when CLEARLY the role Christians should take is one of peacemakers, healers, and servants. NOT because we get "rewarded," but because peacemaking, healing, and service are so desperately needed in this world.

I disagree with John Wesley on a few points, but the one thing he absolutely nailed was "go to those in the most need."

We so need to put away the self-righteousness and go serve.
Consider it a challenge.

Thanks for the question.

Pretty much anything that assumes a literal interpretation of Genesis - on either side (for or against). I just throw up my hands. How do you even try and step into such an inane debate? But the one that really just makes me cringe is when someone tries to "disprove" the Genesis account by complaining because it says God created light on Day 1 but the Sun and moon on Day 4. Hello? What does that disprove? Light existed for millions of years before matter coalesced into the first stars. If you're going to try and show the scientific inaccuracy of a myth (why bother I don't know) at least make sure your science is accurate. Sheesh.

Peace and (((hugGs)))

Questions: Only the idiot ones that are solely designed to annoy people. These come from atheists 99% of the time.

Answers: The ones from people who know nothing about what they're talking about. This can include Christians but usually involve atheists rebelling at the faith they think they have rejected, but clearly knowing almost nothing about it. They have rejected a six-year old's version of Christianity for an adult's version of atheism. I'm talking about the kinds of people who take "The Blasphemy Challenge" and think they're just being the hottest rebels the Christian world has ever seen. Ooh, I'm in awe.

The ones lacking integrity, usually because the asker is posing as a "fellow" whatever or otherwise impersonating as an interested party.

The intent of these questions is usually to spread misinformation and otherwise sow discord between groups that the asker doesn't affiliate with or care about in real life.

Another, significant, reason, is to gather [more mis-] information (they're lazy) for the purpose above, self-stimulation, and/or propaganda efforts.

I don't come to this section all that often but when I do I definitely avoid and and all questions where it's obvious that the person asking the question doesn't even care or bother to want to hear what I or anyone else for that matter have to say about what bias the asker may have in their question. Perfect example would be if they say why do Catholics worship Satan or something to that extent it's not worth the time or effort to me personally.

Your cancer metaphor is very good, couldn't have put it better myself. Nobody knows the "truth" about existence. Science has a shot at it but will admit when it is in error. Religion claims to have an inside track on the meaning of existence and in my view it is like the magician on the stage that will pull a rabbit out of his hat. The only difference is, everybody knows the magician's "magic" isn't real, it's an illusion. It is ironic that when viewed another way, anybody claiming to be religious is basically a believer in lies, and a spreader and perpetrator of lies. This is only my opinion, of course, but I see not one scintilla of evidence of truth in all of this. Close the patient up and give him some medication, because I assure you, without that medication the patient will pray he had some.

I agree with you about the ones that are so steeped in Calvinism that they can't fathom any other way to approach spirituality. To me, the perfect example of that is the whole faith versus works non-issue. It's like they once heard a preacher say "It's only through ____ (fill in the blank) that you are saved" and so they never bother thinking about it or some other possible interpretations of it.

Also, the "literalist" camp who tries to say that everything in the bible MUST be read literally. You know good and well they've never read the entire bible, and are probably too lazy, but they stick with it, because that is easier than thinking for themselves, I guess.

I know it's already been mentioned by somebody, but the most frustrating ones to me are the bible literalists. The ones who come on and say, "Leviticus clearly condems you godless homos," when NOBODY follows all the laws in Leviticus. If they did, Red Lobster and the clothing industry would be in ruins.
