That was Charles Dickens from "The Chimes." Indeed a very profound quote. It was written back in 1844 when we knew very little about psychology.

It goes to show that human beings are subjective--including literally, to their environment. This is why so much of our preoccupation with our personal relationships with one another is really only focus on so much illusion, because to the degree we are subjective, we are really unable to objectively perceive, and be perceived by, others.
