its a psychological reaction. Supposedly it's not always a conscious reaction, but when you see someone yawn, your brain sometimes takes this as a suggestion to yawn too.

I think the reason why yawns are contagious is because when your in a place that's boaring or whatever your doing isn't fun at all, and you show no interest...you start to seem tired which causes you to yawn, and most likely if your in a place like this or doing something that doesn't interest you, most likely other people are two. so your not the only one yawning...

when you yawn when somebody else does its a psychosomatic response and totaly involuntary
