A site explains that it's clinically proven that reds will stain nails more. Though time is the best solution, there are a few other things. The doctors warn you not to try to scrape away the yellow, which will damage nails. Though there a few ways to get it off quick, there is one major suggestion: apply a base coat first. I personally recommend Sally Hansen Hard As Nails in a clear coat. That will protect your nails from those icky stains. One site insists that 3 capfuls of hydrogen peroxide and a fourth cup of water will do the trick. Just take an old toothbrush, dip it in, and scrub the stains off your nails. The first site listed below has someone ask the question and various answers. The second is where I got most of my info. The last is the hydrogen peroxide site. Good luck! I hate that too.

The same thing happened to my toe nails. What she needs to do is get a nail buffer to help buff the stains out. Sometimes yellow nails can ckome from too much keratin in your nails. Just remember if you polish your nails often, remove the polish and give your nails a two or three day break.

How to Whiten Yellow Nails
Buff your nails lightly to remove small amounts of yellow discoloration.
Dissolve a denture-cleaning tablet in water and use this to soak your nails for several minutes.
Squeeze fresh lemon juice into a small bowl ,then soak your nails for a few minutes. Wash your hands and follow with a moisturizer.
Make a paste of baking powder and lemon juice and apply a small amount to each nail. Buff lightly, then wash, dry and moisturize your hands and nails.
Make a paste of three tablespoons of baking soda and one tablespoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide. Use a cotton swap to apply the paste to the tops of your nails and underneath the tips. Leave on for five minutes, then rinse off.
Always wash and moisturize your hands and nails after applying any of these treatments. Keeping your hands and nails well hydrated is an important part of keeping them healthy.
Avoid over-buffing—while small amounts can remove stains and stimulate healthy nail growth, too much buffing can weaken your nails.

In the future i would wear a base coat under any nail varnish especially strong colours. This will prevent the nail varnish from staining your nails. The only way to get rid of the yellow tint on your nails is to keep trimming them when they grow and soon it will grow out. Or you could put a basecoat on your nails and put nail varnish over it to disguise it. (: x

I am a beauty therapist.
This happened because she didn't use a base coat first before applying the colour varnish.
Base coat protects the nail from the pigments in the varnish.
You can get a nail whitener I think the Sally Hansen brand sells one and just apply that.
Just next time use a good quality base coat before putting any colour on.

It's because the nails weren't allowed to breathe and no oxygen came to them so they sort of suffocated. Also the nail varnish may have stained it so next time she'll be needing a base coat.
