I would like to get my cat microchipped if he isn’t already. The problem is, I don’t know if he is or not. I got him from a shelter that no longer exists. I THINK they used to microchip all the dogs and cats they found homes for, but nothing was said about that when I adopted my cat. Here are my questions:

1) IF my cat does have a microchip, would that mean he is on file with a registry somewhere?
2) If I take him to a vet who has a scanner for microchips, would they be able to scan my cat and find out if/where he’s registered and what information is on file?
3) If he is registered somewhere, and the information about who owns him, address, etc., is incorrect, how can I get the information corrected!

I’ve read about a zillion webpages on microchipping pets, but no one ever seems to address questions like these!

It's no problem at all.

Have your vet scan for a chip. There is no charge for this. contact the chip company (most have websites) and give them your new information.

Most vets now have a universal scanner, which means it will scan all chips. There are 2 chips that i am aware of Avid and Home Again. Home Again is the most popular, but alot of shelters used to use the Avid chip as it was cheaper. Your vet should be able to scan the cat for you. If a number is found , your vet can probably contact the company and get your information entered. If your cat dosent have a current chip, then you can get one implanted . Home again has a great promotion going right now, with chipping and registration going for $39.99.(We usually charge $70.00) so talk to your vet.I hope this helps you.

Micro chips are usually in the back of the neck, they hold a unique number when a vet scans them its like a bar code that comes up its entered into the computer and all the information comes up. the vet can update the information for you and delete the old information. the only information that it holds is address, phone number and any important medical information like diabetes ect. as for registry somewhere its more like a national database.

I would not want any of my pets to have one. They have found that it is causing cancer in pets now. The surrounding tissue where the microchip is placed forms a tumor because of the raidiation that it produces. As far as getting one of them read I read an article about this and it was something about some vets having different types of them, etc. and having trouble being able to find out who the owner of the pet even was.

You can take it to a shelter and ask if it has a chip. they'll scan your cat if she doesn't have a chip they won't get a reading. If it does then they can give you the id number and look it up online. I think its www.homeagain.com not too sure. If its not chipped you should get it chipped. You can change all the information online.

A veterinarian can tell you. Bring the pet in. I think you need to contact the company for changing information. I'm sure there is a serial # associated with the information. The serial # is in a database. This is my understanding.

take thecat to the vet, the will scan him and can tell you if he has been or not, they will also then be able to give you a serial number, and who to contact to change the registry.
he may or may not be microchipped, if they did they should've given the info to you.

Yes, have your vet check for a chip, and they can tell you if there is one and what registry to contact. If it's unknown, I guess you get to have a new one implanted.
