I'm always a little nervous about going to the dentist, but I wouldn't be as much if I knew a little of what to expect.

Most of the time, yes. Get a tiny mirror and look into a big mirror while moving the small mirror around, you see a small black dot somewhere... try to brush it or scape it out gently with a fork or metal pick and if it's still there it's probably a cavity. (when brushing to get rid of hard deposits, use a bit of baking soda with your toothpaste)
