I am graduating from Illinois State University in the fall of 2008. I have always wanted to move to hawaii. At the moment I do not want to move there permanently. I thought maybe take a few years (2-3) and enjoy my time out in Hawaii, probably oahu. I will probably rent an apartment and try to get on the fire department around there. If anything I will spend 3 years most there and have a great time. By the end I will be 25-26 and still have time to get my life together here. I know this stupid for me to ask you guys but what are your opinions? I will probably do this anyway, just want to know if others think it is a good idea. Thanks for your advice!

i just moved away from hawaii after five years of living there. i moved there from indiana when i was 19. i think its a great idea. a lot of people never even get the chance to even go to hawaii, let alone live there. i lived on oahu, and the only downfall is that it is super expensive, especially if you are used to the mid west cost of living. a one bedroom apartment will cost you at least $1,000 a month. minimum. but really, i miss it there and almost wish i never moved back to "the mainland". i definitely think you should do it. the job market is great out there, the unemployment rate is very low and the people are nice and friendly (for the most part). plus, its hawaii and its beautiful. but keep in mind, you might not ever come back. a lot of people move there temporarily, and stay forever. the lifestyle there is very different. it may be a little hard to adjust to at first. but its very laid-back and relaxed. There's always something to do. i say, go for it. you do only live once, and why not live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. (i think i'm talking myself into moving back, after giving you this advice) good luck, and have fun.

Try to have very minimal possessions because it is expensive to ship it all over there. And once you get there, you will need plenty cash to get started in a rental. Get your resident card as soon as possible so you don't have to pay tourist rates for things.
Have you been there before? Better test it out first. Sure, it has beaches and a laid-back feeling, but the traffic is awful and you have to make a living like anywhere else.
My theory has always been that you can have fun anywhere if you have money!

I sure can.
Do what you like, I wanted to go to hawaii for a few years too, but ended up going to florida, because hawaii is far more expencive and there is alot of racisim on some of those islands, so, i didnt think i could get a job.
make sure you have enough money to come home stashed away, incase you incounter such a problem.
