The *most famous* doctor that innovated medicine, NOT the best doctor or the best innovation...
Growing up in school, I only remember learning about 5 doctors: Hippocrates, Lister, Salk, Pasteur (as noted above, not technically a doctor), and Freud. While I think that the first four were *better scientists* than Freud, I still think that more people today know about Freud than the others. So I'll say he's the most famous doctor that innovated medicine. (Yes, he did innovate medicine. I may not think all his conclusions are valid, but I do admit that his work laid the foundation for modern psychiatry.)

Pasteur was great, but he was not an MD!
I'd give a vote to William Withering who first observed that the administration of an extract of the foxglove plant known as DIGITALIS cured certain cases of congestive heart failure. Digitalis was a mainstay in medical treatment until recent decades. Some reports indicate that Withering got the recipe from an old crone, ie, a witch. Maybe she should get the vote?
John Hunter was an eighteenth century surgeon whose work in anatomy, physiology of wound healing, and diverse topics such as geology that predate Lyell and others, are amazing, even in modern times.

Hippocrates - Though a lot of his conclusions are wrong, he is one of the first physicians in history that recorded case studies of patients and to approach patient care from a scientific rather than a religious persepective.
Galen - The first great anatomist.

The guy who discovered penicillin, Alexander Fleming.
He had one of the most major impacts in saving poeple's lives. Anyone who has taken antibiotics can say he saved thier lives.
Sadly, germs are becoming more resistant to antibiotics.

Pasteur. I used to read a book about him when I was little and he invented a cure for rabies or something.
