A family member's son is having his first birthday soon and I'm attending the party, and really have no idea what to get him as a present.
Any thoughts on good gifts?

Wood blocks are a great idea since they can be played with for years, don't need batteries, and you can have tons of them or a little bunch and still get the fun out of them. (They come in all price ranges which is nice.)
If you lean toward books, go for board books since 1 year olds love to rip paper. Ones with lift-the-flap pages or textured sections are fun.
Bathtoys are another big hit for 1 year olds. They're confident in sitting upright in the tub and love to fill and empty things, so any type of toy that he can manipulate in the water would be fun.
Be sure to read the packaging of anything you get to make sure it's safe for a 12 month old child. :)

Here's a list... :-) 1- iTunes gift card ($15 or $20/$25.... remember he MUST have an ipod to use this) 2- If he dosen't have an iPod, consider getting him an iPod shuffle.. it's cost is anywhere from $25 - $50 depending on where you buy it (he MUST have a computer to use this) 3- Soccer ball/ base ball/ base ball glove... something sports related 4- Cash or gift card (for a 12 year old.. $20 is appropriate, $15 if your low on cash) 5- If he reads, get him a book. At Barnes & Noble they sell leather bound books with everything Lewis Caroll has ever written for $20... great buy 6- If you know his size get him clothes (Go to marshalls, and look for stuff in his size, sometimes you can find a Ralph Lauren polo for $20 - $25) Good luck :-)

Bead and wire mazes are pretty cool. We had some at the library I worked at and kids were ALWAYS playing with them.

Most of the toys from HABA are cool too. A bit pricier than some plastic toys you can get but they're high quality. My son has a wooden rattle from them. It's very nice looking and the wood makes a pleasant sound.

Books! Blocks! How about some of those alphabet magnets for the fridge? Also - clothes are always appreciated by the parents. At one, the kids don't know that they're missing out on anything yet, by not getting a toy.

Anything age appropriate that is related to cars or trucks, etc.
Besides, he's going to be one. His favorite thing won't be the gift, but the box it comes in.

a bouncey horse! They come low to the groun and with a safety seat for wee ones. Mine LOVED it!

my nephew just turned one in september and we got him this and he loved it.
