I will be traveling from central NY to Shallotte NC and I HATE going by Washington DC anyone have an alternate route that won't take me much longer?

81 will work, but you are probably going to spend more time than it is worth.
Since you are looking at a several hour drive, you are probably best off taking 95 and ensuring that you go past DC at an odd hour to avoid traffic.
My parents used to go back and forth between NJ and Virginia (right past DC) and we would be sure to hit the DC area no earlier than 9pm.

For Charlotte, NC
Take I-81 South to I-77 South to Charlotte, NC.

For Shallotte, NC, Take I-81 South to I-581 South (Roanoke) to US 220 South to I-40 East (Greensboro) to US 17 South (Wilmington).
