Laws or not, the bottom line is that an open atheist would have a very hard time trying to be elected to a public office in the US. I find that rather disturbing.

Why is this? We know why. It's because people still have this delusion that atheists are somehow less moral or responsible than theists. Why do these voters think that? Because they themselves have no concept of ethics outside of religious dogma. And if you're not going to church every week and raising a nuclear family, then you're just not all-American in these people's eyes. And all of this is, of course, bogus.

To quote James Randi:

"The assumption is, and it's such an insulting assumption, I get people asking me all the time, 'But if you don't believe in heaven and hell, why would you live a moral life?' What they're really saying in that statement is 'If I didn't have to fear hell, I would steal, I would rape, I would assault, I would kill. I would do all of those things that I just LOVE to do to some people and under some situtations. I'd get away with anything I could. But no, I fear going to hell and I want to go to heaven. Therefore, I go by the rules.' I find that so insulting."

Well first of all, since a person's beliefs (or lack of beliefs) are ultimately personal, who's to say that one of the presidents we've already had wasn't really an "atheist" deep down inside? Saying you believe something and actually believing it are two different things. Of course all the presidents must say they are Christian...but it's not like we actually get to see if they go to church and pray before bedtime. LOL. And yeah, the debate about what Hiter was, in terms of beliefs in the divine, will go on forever. Christians will say he was "atheistic" or a social darwinist and atheists will say he was Christian (he was...heh!).

I don't care whether Stalin, Hitler, etc. were Christian, Atheist, or Martian; whatever believe/non-belief they *claimed to be* is irrelevent; I wouldn't compare them to anyone as an example of that faith/non-belief. There are extremists/crazies in any religion or group of people.

The bottom line is I wouldn't vote for someone who doesn't share my belief in God because they would not have the same values as myself.

Atheism is equivocated with Communism. (However Karl Marx had nothing against religion) Atheism are a threat to God, Country and the American way. In other words it's a throw-back to the 1950's Red Scare crap.

Because they still want Christians to hold office and make an effort to get church and state combined into one. They know that an Atheist in office will never let that happen, hence the reason why Atheists are discriminated against with regards to holding office

There are probably some countries that would not allow an Atheist to run for public office , but the U .S . is not one of them .

Because it means that they have no higher moral standard. Their morality changes with the times, so they are unstable. Even if a Christian holds an office and sins against the people, he can be called on the carpet and rebuked from a Christian standpoint, and he will feel guilt. An atheist knows no guilt, so he has no parameters for his behavior.
